May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, we continue our exploration into a special topic: the idea of Universal Agents. This teaching is for those of you who feel a profound connection to a purpose beyond the everyday, a sense that you are here to fulfill a destiny tied to your spiritual journey through samsara, the long cycle of birth and death.
We will explore who these individuals are, the unique challenges they face, and the true path they must walk. This discussion aims to bring clarity to your own journey, helping you understand your role and how to proceed with wisdom and grace.

Who Are the Universal Agents?
So, what do we mean by Universal Agents? These are beings who have come into this human world from higher realms, such as the divine Deva worlds or the sublime Brahma worlds. They may even come from other realms of existence, like those of the Yakkhas, Nāgas, or Gandhabbas, provided they possess Sammā Ditthi, or Right View. These beings are born among us, in different countries and at different ages, with an innate sense of duty.
They carry within them a persistent feeling that they have a special task, a ‘rājakāriya’ or royal duty, to perform for their country, their people, and for the preservation of the Buddha’s teachings. Eventually, no matter their background, their path leads them toward the teachings of the Buddha and a commitment to a noble cause. This feeling can manifest in two ways: one driven by understanding, and one driven by excessive, misdirected energy.

The Pitfall of Ego: The ‘Diyasen’ Complex
Some who feel this calling develop an overzealous energy. They take this feeling of destiny and inflate it with ego. In recent times, we saw this with the ‘Diyasen’ phenomenon in Sri Lanka, a prophecy about a great future king. Many people, perhaps influenced by unseen beings with wrong views or their own desires, declared themselves to be this prophesied figure. They made bold predictions, such as for the year 2024, which did not come to pass.
Now, those voices have fallen silent. Many of you may have also felt an attachment to such ideas, perhaps identifying as figures from ancient lore like Ravana or Sita. By now, you likely realize these were projections of the mind, not reality.
This misinterpretation leads to a desire for worldly power. They imagine their spiritual duty involves commanding others, wielding swords, or engaging in a physical battle. They see themselves as powerful figures giving orders. This is a complete misunderstanding. The path of the true spiritual agent is not one of aggression or authority but of inner transformation and quiet service.

The True Path: Humility, Practice, and Understanding
In contrast, there is another group of Universal Agents who proceed with wisdom and humility. They understand their purpose without needing to announce it. These individuals:
- Quietly cultivate their inner world through meditation, developing both tranquility (Samatha) and insight (Vipassanā).
- Engage in acts of devotion and offering (āmisa pūjā).
- Prioritize ethical conduct, carefully guarding their Sīla (morality).
- Focus on practice and self-discipline rather than external recognition.
This is the path I admire, free from extremism and ego. Whether you are certain you are a Universal Agent or are still questioning it, living with this kind of understanding is what truly matters. If you live this way, I can point to you as a true agent. Without this inner foundation, such a claim is empty.

The Cosmic Plan Versus Artificial Effort
A crucial point to understand is that if you are one of these Universal Agents, your life unfolds according to a pre-existing spiritual plan. If you try to force things artificially, thinking up your own grand projects for the nation or religion, you will fail. Have you tried to form a group or lead a movement, perhaps with misguided ideas about your own importance? You would have found that the group collapsed. People who promised support disappeared.
Your efforts led to failure and disillusionment. This applies to both men and women, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike.
This failure is not just a coincidence; it is a sign. It is nature showing you that what you were trying to do was not your real duty. It was a creation of your own mind. The cosmic plan is designed to isolate you and cause you to fail when you deviate from it, pushing you toward your true path.
This can be confusing, as failures can also arise from past negative kamma (intentional actions). However, for a Universal Agent, persistent failure in worldly pursuits, marriage, career, education, despite earnest effort, might indicate that your true path lies elsewhere, perhaps in a life of renunciation or dedicated spiritual service.

A Practical Guide: The Path Forward
If these experiences resonate with you, whether you were born in Sri Lanka or drawn to its culture and the Buddha’s teachings from abroad, there is a specific way to proceed. Your life may have had a turning point that brought you here. Now, you must act with wisdom. From this day forward, here is what you should do:
- Embrace Devotional Practices: Regularly engage in traditional practices, such as chanting protective verses (pirit) and making offerings.
- Cultivate Meditation: Practice both tranquility (Samatha) and insight (Vipassanā) meditation, especially focusing on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) to develop sharp awareness.
- Uphold Morality (Sīla): Strictly protect your ethical conduct. At minimum, uphold the Five Precepts. If you are single, guard your celibacy (brahmacariyā). If married, be faithful to your partner, containing your sensual desires within that righteous boundary.
These practices build the foundation for what comes next: a powerful spiritual determination.

The Great Determination: Aligning with the Natural Flow
After building a foundation of morality, concentration, and devotional practice, you must make a specific and powerful resolution, known as an adhiṭṭhāna. At a time when your mind is calm and concentrated, perhaps before or after meditation, make this silent vow:
“If I have been born in this human world from a divine or brahma realm to perform a task for the sake of my country, people, and the Buddha’s teachings, may it all unfold according to the true cosmic plan. May it happen naturally, without any artificial effort from my side. May I receive the protection and guidance of all benevolent, right-viewing unseen beings. May everything happen naturally and according to the plan!”
Make this resolution daily, morning and evening. When you visit powerful, sacred sites in Sri Lanka, like the great Ruwanwelisaya stupa or the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, places holding relics of the Buddha, renew this determination. This act aligns your will with the natural unfolding of your destiny.

Living in Trust and Silence: Your Duty Unfolds
Once you make this determination, you must let go. Forget about having a ‘duty.’ Release it from your mind. Continue living your worldly life with balance, fulfill your responsibilities at your job, in your studies, and to your family. Be a good parent, spouse, and child.
Keep your spiritual identity a secret. Do not discuss these deep feelings with those who lack understanding; they will only call you mentally ill and may even try to have you medicated. Speak of these things only with a trusted spiritual friend who shares your understanding. Your role is not to boast or announce, ‘I am a Universal Agent!’ That is ego. True purpose unfolds in silence and humility.
Over time, perhaps months, perhaps years, things will begin to happen naturally. The right people will appear. The right resources will become available. You will be guided into your role, whether it is in social service, politics, or spiritual teaching. Do not seek your mission. Do not try to figure out what it is.
Just practice, make your determination, and live rightly. Your purpose will fulfill itself through you, naturally. This practice will also help you understand your ultimate spiritual goal, be it Buddhahood or Arahantship. Your path will become clear when the time is right, after your part in the plan is complete.
