Categories: Other Meditation Teachings
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, through our spiritual teachings, we wish to explore a unique and profound topic: the experience of being awakened for meditation by a mysterious helper. This is one of the more curious spiritual awakening experiences that can arise as your practice deepens. It is not something that happens to everyone, but many dedicated practitioners on the spiritual path have shared this with us, and we have experienced it personally.
It is important to approach this topic with a balanced mind. Some may dismiss these events as mere fantasies or psychological tricks. We want to assure you that these are not imagined things. At the same time, one should never try to force such an experience to happen. Some people become obsessed with spiritual powers and want to show off their connection to unseen worlds.
This is one extreme. On the other end are those who aggressively deny anything they cannot physically prove, calling it delusion. The truth, as in all things, lies in the middle. These spiritual awakening experiences are natural phenomena, like the rain that falls or the sun that shines, appearing unexpectedly when the conditions are right.
They cannot be forced, and they are not a cause for pride. This experience may or may not happen to you, and either outcome is perfectly fine for your meditation practice. So, let us explore this with an open and neutral mind.

The Context: Why Do These Spiritual Awakening Experiences Happen?
This phenomenon often occurs for those engaged in dedicated, consistent meditation. We guide practitioners in methods such as the practical third eye meditation and paths to higher realms, which involve awakening what is known as Kundalini or universal energy. As you practice consistently with genuine desire and willingness, your spiritual faculties develop.
Some may experience the awakening of the ‘third eye,’ a center of inner sight, while others may not. This particular experience can happen to practitioners at any stage.
These individuals practice with great self-effort and joy, driven by a sincere wish to calm the mind and find peace. Over time, this dedicated practice can attract the attention and support of beings from other realms. These helpers are often drawn to the virtue and sincerity of the meditator, whether they are practicing at home, in a monastery, in a forest, or even at their workplace, be it in Sri Lanka or abroad.
These unseen beings notice the positive transformation: ‘Ah, this person is cultivating their mind. They are following the Buddha’s path, developing mindfulness, and understanding their own thoughts. We should help them.‘
Who is the Mysterious Awakener? Beings on the Path
So, who is this mysterious presence that awakens you?
It could be a variety of beings who support your spiritual progress. They may be connected to you through past karmic ties or simply be benevolent beings residing in your environment, like a tree spirit or an earth deity (known as vruksha devatha or bhummatu deva in the Pali tradition).
Sometimes, it could be a good amanussa, a term that means ‘non-human.’ When people hear this, they often get scared, assuming all such beings are malevolent. But this is not true. There are very kind non-human beings who have taken refuge in the Buddha and wish to support practitioners. It could also be a deva (a celestial being or deity) or even a Brahma, a being from a higher, more refined celestial realm who is revered even by devas. In some cases, it may even be the subtle influence of a highly developed human yogi meditating elsewhere, such as in the Himalayas.
Of course, it is also true that not all unseen beings are helpful. Some, holding wrong views (micchāditthi), may try to disrupt your practice. However, as your own mind-power (chitta shakti) grows strong, not even a deva or Mara (the tempter figure in Buddhism) can easily interfere. But let’s not get sidetracked.
It’s crucial not to blame every difficulty in meditation on external forces. Most often, a lack of enthusiasm or distraction comes from the ‘Maras’ within our own minds. Understanding this distinction is key.

How it Happens: The Signs of a Spiritual Nudge
These spiritual awakening experiences happen most often in the early morning hours, between midnight and 5 or 6 a.m. This is a time when the universe is quiet and universal energy is potent, making it an ideal time for Samatha bhāvanā, or calmness meditation. (Vipassanā, or insight meditation, is of course a practice for every waking moment).
Imagine you are sleeping until 5 a.m., but you are a consistent meditator. A supportive unseen being might come to wake you. How? The experience can be physical. You might feel a tug on your leg, a pinch, or a gentle stroking sensation on your leg or body. Sometimes, they might gently shake your body, just as you would wake a sleeping friend. Other times, you might hear an object fall in the room. This is their way of saying, ‘It’s time to meditate.‘
It is very important not to be frightened if this happens. We have advised many who have had these spiritual awakening experiences to remain calm, understand the wholesome reason behind it, and see it as a positive sign of support for their practice. For those whose ‘third eye’ is open, they may even see these beings. For others, it is simply a physical sensation or a feeling.

The Right Attitude: Receiving Help Without Pride or Expectation
If you have such spiritual awakening experiences, the correct attitude is crucial. Do not develop pride or conceit (known as māna), thinking, ‘Oh, I am so special that unseen worlds are helping me.‘ Taking it as a concept to feel important is meaningless and will harm your practice. It is just a form of help, nothing more. Think of it this way: it is like a kind person giving you 100 or 1000 rupees when you are in need or offering you goods when you have nothing. It is a simple act of support. Acknowledge it, feel gratitude, and then let it go.
Do not cling to it and certainly do not start expecting it to happen. These things occur precisely when you are not looking for them. If you start craving or anticipating these spiritual awakening experiences, your meditation will deteriorate. See it as a normal event on the path, face it with equanimity, and continue your practice. That is all that is required.
A Sign of Your Progress: What These Encounters Can Teach You
These spiritual awakening experiences are more than just strange events; they can be a useful signpost. They may indicate that your practice is bearing fruit. The support from the unseen world is often a reflection of your own virtue (dhārmika bhava). It’s a sign that your goodness, kindness, and righteous conduct are growing, and your jealousy, anger, and hatred are diminishing. It’s a form of natural feedback from the universe.
Sometimes, you may be visited not by one being, but by a whole group who may even meditate in front of you, an experience visible to those with an awakened third eye. This can include groups of devas or even benevolent non-humans. Remember, even in the Buddha’s time, there were beings from the ‘yaksha’ realm who attained stages of enlightenment. So, understand that these things are possible.
If these experiences happen and then stop, it can also be a signal. It might mean your virtue has declined or your meditation has stagnated. It serves as a personal indicator. Therefore, view these encounters as a helpful barometer for your own inner purity and progress, but remember they are external events. The real work is to continue developing your own mind.
