May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!

Today, I want to share something deeply personal from my own spiritual journey. You may have heard of concepts like ‘Universal Energy‘ or ‘Kundalini Energy.’ Many traditions describe this as a force that awakens through seven energy centers in the body, often called chakras. Perhaps you are already on this path, perhaps you are just beginning, or maybe this is entirely new to you. Whatever your situation, my hope is that by sharing my practical experiences, you may find encouragement and clarity for your own path of spiritual awakening.

Understanding Kundalini and the Seven Chakras in the Modern World

Let’s briefly touch upon the current understanding of Universal Energy and Kundalini energy. In today’s world, Kundalini energy is often described in relation to seven energy centers, or chakras, located along the spine, from its base to the crown of the head. Through the internet, books, and the teachings of yogis both past and present, many of you are likely already familiar with this concept. I know you have researched, read, and discussed this, so you have a good understanding. That is why I will only mention it briefly.

These seven chakras are typically known as: Mūlādhāra (Root), Svādhiṣṭhāna (Sacral), Maṇipūra (Solar Plexus), Anāhata (Heart), Viśuddhi (Throat), Ājñā (Third Eye), and finally, Sahasrāra (Crown) at the top of the head.

It is widely known that each of these chakras is associated with different functions. For example, one chakra might be linked to the power of speech, while another is connected to the opening of the third eye. This information is widely available in many sources.

Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Terms

Currently, people use various methods to awaken this Kundalini energy and draw universal energy into the body. I will mention a few.

Many people practice Yoga, believing that these physical activities can awaken the chakras. Yogis, particularly those in regions like the Himalayas, engage deeply in these practices to awaken their Kundalini energy.

Another method involves the consumption of a plant known as Pranajeewa (Codariocalyx motorius). Practitioners believe that ingesting this plant awakens the dormant energy within the body.

I have also seen another method online involving sound. Each of the seven chakras is said to correspond to a specific sound frequency. People are instructed to listen to these sound waves, often with headphones, to stimulate the nerves and awaken the chakras one by one. I have experimented with this myself and found that it can induce a certain level of concentration, a state known as Samadhi in Buddhism, which refers to deep meditative focus.

Furthermore, I have observed a method used by yogis in countries like India, where a teacher who has awakened their chakras can transfer their energy to their disciples. This is an invisible transmission of power. I have seen that when this energy is received, some people behave as if possessed by a non-human entity, some even moving like a dancing serpent. You may have seen this online.

These are just some of the many methods people use, including various forms of concentration meditation, to awaken the Kundalini energy. It is important to understand that diverse paths and meditation techniques may exist.

Interpreting These Experiences Through Buddhism

You will not find the words ‘Kundalini‘ or ‘Universal Energy‘ in the ancient Buddhist scriptures. So, how do we understand these experiences from a Buddhist perspective? The Buddha taught that through dedicated meditation, we can develop extraordinary abilities. These are not magic, but the natural result of a highly developed mind.

The path for this is called Samatha meditation, or the practice of calm-abiding, which leads to deep states of concentration. When the mind becomes sufficiently powerful and stable, one can develop what are known as the Pañca-abhiññā, or the Five Higher Knowledges. I have mentioned them in previous teachings. Simply put, they are:

  1. Psychic powers like levitation and walking on water (Iddhividha)
  2. The ability to hear sounds from other realms (Clairaudience)
  3. The ability to see one’s own past lives (retro-cognition)
  4. The ability to see beings in other realms and know the destiny of others (Dibbacakkhu)
  5. The ability to read the minds of others (Telepathy).

From my experience, the powerful phenomena people call ‘Kundalini awakening‘ are a manifestation of the mind being developed through these very Samatha practices.

When we connected these dots what the Buddha taught about the five abilities and our own research into the writings of ancient and modern yogis we came to an understanding. The yogis ascribed different powers to each of the seven chakras: one awakens the third eye, another grants healing abilities, another gives the power of speech, and so on. Putting all these sources together, we realized that the terms are just different words for the same phenomenon

The First Stirrings: An Encounter with an Unseen Guide

Now, from this point forward, I will share our practical experiences and how this energy first came to us. We received this energy from a special, unseen force a being of great character, immense knowledge of yoga and various other subjects, and deep experience in meditation, particularly with Kundalini energy and universal energy. This being was highly skilled in concentration meditation, which in Buddhism is called Samatha Bhavana. It is through this being that we received this power.

Please do not misunderstand this. It was not a shamanic blessing (varam) or a form of possession by deities or spirits as you might see in a shrine (devala) where fortunes are told. It was nothing like that. Through our later experiences, we understood that this energy was given to us to help develop our Samatha meditation, our practice of tranquility. To help you understand, consider an analogy. We know of Śakra, the king of the gods, who rules over two heavenly realms. The Buddha himself spoke of Śakra, and the commentaries on the scriptures (Tripitaka) mention his great power and immense merit.

Imagine receiving a blessing to advance your meditation from such a powerful and virtuous being. How potent would that be? This is just an example to help you grasp the nature of what we received. It came from a being who had gone far beyond these things.

When this energy first came to us, the initial sensation was like being pricked with needles on our fingertips. We felt something entering our body through our fingers. Then, our spine began to feel cool, a deep chill spreading through it. We could feel something moving up the spine to the crown of the head, and also moving down from the lower back.

We also sensed movement within our body, like small creatures crawling around. Along with these sensations, we began to perceive a light or energy beam entering the space between our eyebrows, on our forehead. Our head felt heavy, and we felt a rotating or spinning sensation at the crown. A great many sensations like these began to appear after we received this energy.

Spontaneous Yoga and Mindful Awareness

Simultaneously, our bodies began to perform yoga-like activities and exercises spontaneously. Our backs would bend and lift on their own, moved by this energy. We had never practiced yoga or any such exercises in this lifetime. We had seen it in books and on television, but we had never engaged in the practice. Yet, for us who had never done it, these complex yoga movements started happening automatically through this energy. These sessions could last for half an hour, an hour, sometimes two or three, and at times for six hours straight. We would continue until it stopped.

Crucially, throughout this entire process, we remained fully conscious and mindful. You might think this sounds like a possession by a non-human entity or some other strange phenomenon. But no. During this time, we maintained clear comprehension, or what the Buddha taught as Vipassana insight with clear awareness. It is because we maintained this mindfulness (sati) that we can remember every detail of these activities and share them with you today.

While remaining perfectly mindful, these things occurred. After the yoga-like movements ceased, our bodies would automatically settle into a meditation posture, a cross-legged position. Our hands would spontaneously form various hand gestures, known as mudras, and we would sit in meditation with these mudras.

Naturally, as these things happened, we felt fear and uncertainty. Anyone would. These events took place about ten years ago, and experiencing them at that time inevitably brought about fear. We spoke about it with some people, both monks and laypeople. The only answer we received was that it was either a non-human disturbance or a mental illness.

We chose not to accept their limited perspectives or be confined by their frameworks. We looked beyond their explanations, and, despite the fear, we continued to engage with these experiences.

As I mentioned, the yoga happened spontaneously. After some time, this evolved, and we began to spontaneously practice martial arts. Specifically, the movements of Angampora, a traditional Sri Lankan martial art, started happening through us. We would stand with our eyes closed, and our limbs would move on their own, executing the fighting techniques of Angampora. Just like with the yoga, we had never practiced or learned this martial art in this life. But the fighting styles how to strike, how to grapple came to us automatically. We also spontaneously learned the energy-point systems within this art, like how to strike vital pressure points (nila) and manipulate energy channels (nadi). We would train like this for up to six hours a day. This process continued for three or four years.

We also gained the ability to speak in various ‘universal languages‘ while remaining fully conscious and mindful. We felt an immense lightness and power during these experiences.

Facing the Shadows: Finding Protection on the Path

Despite these incredible experiences, the fear and uncertainty remained because we couldn’t fully understand what was happening. The unseen being who gave us this energy had disappeared during the initial stages, but he reconnected with us later when we had reached a certain level of mastery. By then, we had already found answers to most of our questions, and his return clarified everything.

We discovered how to protect ourselves. The first thing we understood came from the Buddha’s teaching in the Metta-nisamsa Sutta, which describes the eleven benefits of practicing loving-kindness meditation, or Metta Bhavana. One benefit is that non-human beings become fond of you. Realizing this, we began to practice Metta meditation intensely. Over time, all the disturbances from external negative forces be they mischievous spirits or misguided deities with wrong views (micchā ditthi) completely ceased.

We also began chanting protective verses, known as paritta. We would chant certain suttas like the Jalanandana Paritta 108 or 1000 times, and the Ratana Sutta 7 or 21 times. I remember at times, the non-human beings would become agitated and we could hear them outside our rooms, whispering, ‘What you are doing is useless, it will bring no results.‘ But when we heard this, we understood that we were on the right path. An increase in obstacles is often the surest sign that you are moving correctly. So we persisted. As disciples of the Buddha, we cultivated mindfulness of the present moment and upheld our moral precepts the five precepts (Pañcasīla), the eight precepts (Aṭṭhasīla), or the ten precepts (Dasasīla). Through this combination of meditation, chanting, and moral discipline, we gained immense power, spiritual energy, and an indescribable mental peace and relief.

This is how we protected ourselves and reached a state of completeness.

The Fruits of Practice: Abilities Beyond the Veil

After practicing correctly and protecting ourselves in this way, we began to develop remarkable abilities through this awakened Kundalini energy. The third eye of those in our group opened, granting us what is called dibbacakkhu the divine eye, or the ability to see unseen worlds. We could communicate with beings in these realms, learn their stories, and interact with them. We also developed manomaya iddhi, a form of psychic power related to creating a ‘mind-made body‘, often called an astral body.

Through this, we could travel. For instance, it is said that there is a universal gateway within the great Ruwanwelisaya stupa in Sri Lanka. This is true. Those with a developed mind can use their mind-made body to enter this cosmic center and travel into the universe.

We began to journey to other planets and see beings beyond our world. Everyone in our group saw these things. We also gained the ability to awaken the Kundalini energy in others, either by directly working with their energy channels (nadi) and pressure points (nila) or simply by our presence.

Our energy became so strong that if someone sat next to us on a bus, their own energy would begin to awaken, something they themselves would point out to us. We could see past events and future possibilities. We could see and communicate with beings from other galaxies what people call extraterrestrials as well as with famous and unknown figures in the unseen realms.

These abilities also allowed us to access ancient knowledge, like mantras and verses (shlokas) thousands of years old, which we could recite perfectly. These are just some of the many abilities that arose from the safe and correct development of this Kundalini energy.

Sharing the Gift: How We Helped Others Awaken Their Potential

We used these abilities to help people, especially sincere meditators. Using our mind-made body and third eye, we would go to powerful places like the Ruwanwelisaya stupa, select devoted individuals among the pilgrims, and transfer our energy to them, awakening their own Kundalini chakras. We gave this energy to people of all ages across Sri Lanka children, young adults, and the elderly. When we appeared to them in this way, they might perceive us as divine beings or ancient sages (rishis).

We also helped those we knew personally and their acquaintances. We opened the third eye for many, allowing them to see the unseen realms the world of spirits and ghosts (pretas and yakshas), the four lower realms of existence (apayas), the heavenly realms (deva lokas), and the Brahma worlds.

We showed them many things beyond this human world. We awakened the Kundalini energy in many people by physically working with their energy channels and pressure points. Some in our group had the ability to heal illnesses in this way. Eventually, our power grew so strong that we could awaken someone’s Kundalini energy or open their third eye remotely over the telephone, helping people in different countries.

We could also resolve issues with non-human entities for those who meditated with us, removing spirits that were causing trouble. In the beginning, we would sometimes destroy these entities by burning them with our energy, but we later realized this was an unskillful action that created negative karma, so we stopped. The point is that these meditation practices gave us a great capacity to serve humanity, and the work we do today is a direct result of that journey.

A Warning for the Journey: The Dangers of Spiritual Awakening

However, it is crucial that I also share how some people who walked this path with us were led to their own downfall. You can learn a great deal from their mistakes.

As I mentioned, the third eye opens. Some, upon gaining the ability to see hidden treasures beneath the earth, ignored the guidance of their teachers and tried to unearth them. This greed led them to get caught by the police and even face imprisonment. In the end, they lost their ability to see, forgetting they ever had it, all because they disobeyed their teachers’ advice.

Others fell due to jealousy. They would become envious when others received abilities they didn’t have, or when someone else’s abilities developed faster or in a different way. This jealousy, a mental defilement or kilesa in Buddhism, caused them to misuse their gifts.

As a result, they lost everything their third eye, their spiritual powers. This is why the Buddha taught that we must either control, recognize, or eliminate these defilements through the path of wisdom (Vipassana).

Another group fell into the trap of ego. When they gained these powers, they began to think, ‘There is no one as powerful as me. I am the greatest.‘ This very thought marks the beginning of one’s destruction. Still others misused their power for control.

The meditative power can be used to influence others, but they used it without limit, particularly to control women and bring them under their power for sensual purposes. This only inflames greed (lobha) and lust (raga), and they too fell into ruin, losing all they had gained. These are the ways we witnessed people who were with us go to their own destruction.

This is a critical lesson: psychic power without wisdom and ethical purity is a path to self-destruction. The true spiritual awakening is not about gaining powers, but about purifying the heart of greed, hatred, and delusion.
