May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Welcome. Today, we continue our exploration of a topic that resonates deeply with many of you: the idea of being a ‘Universal Agent.’ You may be wondering if this title applies to you, feeling a sense of uncertainty. I encourage you to set that question aside for a moment. Whether you identify with this label or not is not the most important thing. The real goal is to find something in this teaching that you can take into your life, something that helps you shape your mindset and progress on your spiritual journey. What we discuss here is valuable for your inner growth.
As you read, try to practice what resonates and live in accordance with it. Through this practice, many things will become clear, and over time, you may even come to understand if you are a Universal Agent or not. For those who have already gained some insight from these teachings, we see you are already working quietly, without needing to display yourselves to the world as someone special. You are proceeding in silence, and that is precisely what we hope for. This article is intended to clarify this path for you further.

The Agony of a Misfired Mission: When Good Intentions Fail
However, there is still a group of people who feel agitated by this idea. They think, “I am a Universal Agent, born to serve my country, my people, and my faith.” This belief stirs them into action, and it is primarily for these individuals that I offer this teaching today.
Perhaps you feel this way. You might be a young person with a passionate heart, feeling a deep pain for your nation, your culture, and your religion. This patriotism is a beautiful quality. When you see what is happening in the world, especially in a place like Sri Lanka, you may feel a sense of sorrow and a powerful urge to stand up and do something. You try to initiate change, sometimes alone, sometimes by gathering a group of like-minded people.
But what often happens? These noble efforts tend to falter right at the beginning. The groups you form, which started with such enthusiasm, begin to drift apart. People lose their initial passion, disagreements arise, and the mission you set out on is abandoned. To put it in the simplest terms, your work tends to end in failure. This pattern is a crucial sign, a message that we need to understand to find our true spiritual purpose.

Nature’s Message in Failure: Why Your Efforts Struggle
When your sincere efforts consistently fail, it is not a sign that you are unworthy. Instead, nature itself is sending you a message. If you are truly a Universal Agent, here in this world for a specific task, perhaps to fulfill certain perfections (known in Buddhism as Pāramitā) on your path to enlightenment, this repeated failure is a guide. Many are still in the process of identifying their unique journey, whether it’s toward becoming a disciple, a self-enlightened being, or a fully enlightened Buddha.
The primary reason for this failure is simple: what you are trying to do is not what you are meant to be doing right now. Your actions may be driven by youthful energy, physical vitality, or a powerful emotional response to the world’s problems. Whether you are young or old, man or woman, this strong feeling pushes you to act. Yet, the projects stall. The teams dissolve. The people you count on for support do not show up. This failure is a near certainty in such cases.
This is not just about worldly projects. Even in your spiritual life, you might try to start something, a meditation group, a service project, only to find it fails due to external pressures or your own mental states. Even those living abroad, who feel a deep patriotic connection and try to organize help for their homeland, often express this frustration.
They say, “We try to do something, but the probability of failure is so high. We can’t seem to fight against the current forces.” Their time, money, and energy are spent, and while every experience teaches a lesson, the project itself fails. The core message is this: your true spiritual purpose may lie elsewhere, or it may be waiting for a different time.

The Path of Patient Cultivation: What to Do While You Wait
So, if your actions are met with failure, what is the wisest course of action? After much observation and reflection on the experiences of many, the message is clear: during this period, the most beneficial thing you can do is to step aside and be quiet. By embracing stillness and silence, you create the conditions for your true journey to succeed when the time is right. There are times to stand up for one’s country and faith, but there are also times for strategic silence.
This period of waiting is not passive. There are two critical reasons for your current setbacks:
1. The task you have chosen is not the one meant for you.
2. The right time has not yet come. There is a specific, appropriate time for your work to begin, a form of divine timing.
Until that time arrives, your duty is to cultivate patience and focus on your inner and outer life:
- Develop your mind: Engage in practices that cultivate wisdom and peace.
- Nourish your spiritual life: Whether through acts of service or inner practice, strengthen your spiritual foundation.
- Fulfill your daily responsibilities: Do not neglect your duties. If you are a student, excel in your studies. If you are working or have a family, fulfill your obligations with care and dedication.
Mastering these areas of your life is essential. Until the specific time arrives, remember that any attempt to force your grand mission will likely fail. And even when the right time comes, you must also wait for your turn.

The Illusion of Control: Why You Can’t Force Your Destiny
Many people become intoxicated with ideas about who they are supposed to be. They might imagine their spiritual purpose is to revive ancient martial arts, perform miraculous healing with universal energy, or fulfill some other grand destiny. Please, do not cling to these ideas. Let go of these fantasies from the past.
Of course, if special abilities arise naturally, like the psychic powers known as Pañca-abhiññā, and your work succeeds through them, there is no issue. But if you are trying to force things and they are failing, you must reconsider. For example, some believe they can heal any illness with energy.
This is not possible. We must remember that even the Buddha experienced headaches as a result of a past intentional action, a concept known as Kamma. His personal physician, Jivaka, had to treat him. If the Buddha, who had perfected his connection to universal energy, was still subject to the results of his Kamma, we must understand that there are limits. Not every illness can be healed by faith alone; sometimes, the expertise of Western, Ayurvedic, or other traditional doctors is necessary.
If you try to force yourself into the spotlight, to become a ‘big shot’ before your time, you risk more than just failure. It can be a threat to your own safety to become too prominent prematurely. You will not gain the recognition you seek; instead, you may face embarrassment or simply be ignored. The universe has its own protective mechanisms, and this failure is one of them.

Recognizing the Flow: The Signs of Your True Path
So how do you recognize your true spiritual purpose when it appears? The key is that it happens naturally. True success comes from what unfolds without force. Let’s say, even if the ‘right time’ has not officially arrived, you find yourself naturally drawn into a process. You help someone, or a project begins, and it flows effortlessly. There is no struggle, no strain. The work succeeds.
This success can manifest in any area of your life. It could be related to your country, your faith, or your personal spiritual journey. For instance, imagine you are pursuing your education. If the path is smooth, without obstacles, pressure, or struggle, and you are able to advance to the highest levels with a sense of lightness, that is a sign of success. This is your path. This is what is most suitable for you. Any journey you undertake that feels light, unblocked, and free from hindrance is the one that is unfolding naturally. That is the true and successful work you are meant to do.
This doesn’t mean we should become lazy or avoid intentional action in our everyday lives, in our jobs or farming. This teaching is specifically for those who feel they have a special mission or ‘duty’ for which they came into this world. When an organization forms naturally, when people volunteer without being asked, when you take a leading role not by force but by circumstance, and the work flourishes more and more, that is the work that is meant to happen through you. We don’t all need to be leaders. If everyone tried to be a leader, that too would lead to failure. The key is recognizing the effortless flow.

Embracing the Present: The Ultimate Path to Your Spiritual Purpose
What if you approach someone you believe is perfect for your mission, and they dismiss your idea, showing no interest? This is another sign. It means they are not the right person for this task at this time. However, when the divine timing is right, that same person may return with enthusiasm and a willingness to listen. Until then, you must understand that the conditions are not yet ripe.
Many young people try to force change, but in today’s world, it is difficult to contend with the established powers of wealth and influence without a special spiritual strength. Do not try to draw power from a past identity you believe you had. You may have tried this already and found it doesn’t work. The truth is, you cannot summon the strength of a past life just by believing you were that person. Instead, focus on the present. Meditate. Follow the liberating path taught by the Buddha. Do the work that is here for you now.
Many who held great expectations for years like 2024, believing they were figures like Diyasena or Ravana, are now disillusioned. Their prophecies failed. These stories, once rampant on social media, have faded. Do not be caught in such traps. The best path is this: hold your love for your country in your heart, but do not let it become a source of agitation. Learn from the past, use it to help the present, and build a future.
The most important practice is to live in the present moment with a light and free mind. Give time, time. Do not try to force power or action. Only engage in what unfolds naturally. Nature will help us. The Buddha made a determination that his teachings would be protected in Sri Lanka for 5,000 years, and divine beings work to uphold this.
History shows us that this land has seen cycles of collapse and renewal, roughly every 500 years. This is the nature of existence, the universal characteristic of impermanence, which in Buddhism is called Anicca. Good rises and then falls; bad rises and then falls. Understanding this cosmic rhythm is key, whether you are a Universal Agent or not.

Conclusion: The Power of Quiet Stillness
If you are trying to find your spiritual purpose, know that your mind will be light and at ease when you stop pushing. The final, simple advice is this: until your specific time arrives, your most important task is to remain silent and still, all while nourishing your spiritual path.
Let go of elaborate thoughts about the future; forget it. Let go of clinging to the past; forget that too. Live only in the present. Face the challenges of your daily life with a balanced mind, with the quality of equanimity known as Upekkha. By living in this way, you will find you can navigate life without carrying a heavy burden. You can live a truly free and simple life.
