May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!

Today, as we continue our journey of spiritual development, I wish to share some insights on a topic that is fundamental to our practice: the place where we meditate. In our previous discussions, we have touched upon spiritually powerful locations in Sri Lanka, places vibrant with a universal energy that are conducive to both calm abiding and insight meditation, known in Buddhism as Samatha-Vipassana.

However, for most of us, visiting these special sites every day is simply not possible. Your primary place of practice is likely your own home perhaps a room with a small shrine, a corner where you light an offering lamp, or even your private bedroom. This is true for those of us in Sri Lanka and for our friends living and working abroad, who often find solace for meditation within their personal room. Let’s explore how to make this personal, dedicated meditation space a powerful aid on your path.

Training the Mind: Why a Consistent Location Deepens Your Practice

You might wonder why having one specific place is so important. While there is great merit in meditating at powerful sites like the great Ruwanwelisaya stupa and if you can go daily, that is wonderful our daily duties and responsibilities often keep us at home. This is where creating a dedicated meditation space becomes essential.

Many homes have a separate room for a shrine, perhaps on an upper floor, set apart from the daily hustle. If you have such a space, it is the most suitable place for your practice. The key is consistency. By practicing in the same spot every day, your mind becomes conditioned. It learns that this place is for stillness and contemplation. If you have begun a practice like the ‘Third Eye’ or ‘Brahma Loka’ meditation we have previously explored, cultivating it in this one spot is incredibly beneficial. Your mind and body become attuned to the space.

If you then try to meditate in a different room, you might feel that the practice doesn’t “flow” as easily. This is because your mind is trained for the shrine room, the place where you make offerings and connect with the qualities of the Buddha. So, try to maintain your practice in this primary location. You can have a secondary spot for emergencies, but your main training should happen in your chosen sacred corner.

Practical Wisdom: The Bed, The Floor, and Overcoming Drowsiness

Some of you may practice in other peaceful spots at home, such as a beautiful garden or under a favorite tree. I have heard from many who do this, and if you have found a place that works for you and you are consistent with it, that is perfectly fine. The principle remains the same: train in that one spot.

Now, let’s address a common question. In the past, I have said that there is no issue with meditating on your bed. This is true there is no demerit or negative kamma (intentional action) associated with it. Please do not misunderstand this point. However, for the most effective practice, it is more suitable to sit on the floor, perhaps on a cushion or mat just an inch or so thick. Why? When we meditate in a place without a bed, like a shrine room, we know we cannot lie down.

If drowsiness arises, we are more motivated to straighten our spine and push through it. On the bed, the temptation to simply roll over and sleep is strong, and the effort to overcome sleepiness diminishes. Think of students who find they get sleepy when studying near their bed; they often move to a desk to stay alert and focused. The same principle applies directly to meditation. Choosing a spot away from the bed is not a rule of morality, but a practical tool to achieve results more quickly in your dedicated meditation space.

Building Spiritual Energy: How Your Space Becomes a Power Spot

When you consistently practice in one dedicated meditation space, something remarkable happens: the space itself becomes powerful. It becomes charged with a strong, tangible spiritual energy, which in our tradition we might call chitta shakti, or mind-energy. The more you practice there, the stronger this energy becomes. This concentrated energy not only supports your own practice but can also be a great help to anyone else in your home who meditates there. If two people practice regularly in the same spot, the energy intensifies even more.

You will begin to feel this difference. You will sense the unique frequency or vibration of your meditation space compared to, say, your bedroom. The energy in your room will feel different, less concentrated. And when you visit a truly powerful universal site, like the Ruwanwelisaya or other ancient sacred grounds, you will feel another, even more potent level of energy.

You don’t need special psychic abilities or higher knowledge (abhiññā) to perceive this; as your mind develops systematically, your body and mind will naturally become sensitive to these energetic shifts. This is why many feel an indescribable peace at a temple or under a Bodhi tree a peace that money cannot buy. As your practice deepens, you too will start to notice these subtle but profound differences, leading you to appreciate the serene beauty of a connection with nature and the environment.

The Rhythm of Practice: The Importance of a Consistent Time

This principle of consistency extends beyond place to include time. If you can, try to set aside a specific time for meditation each day. For example, if you begin your practice at 3:30 or 4:00 AM, and you do this consistently, your mind will become conditioned to settle down and grow deep at that particular time. Both the place (your dedicated meditation space) and the time work together to support your Samatha or calm-abiding meditation. That hour becomes a period when your mind-energy naturally strengthens.

You might notice that if you meditate at a different time, it doesn’t feel quite as deep or powerful. It still works, the mind is still developing, but it lacks the potency of your established time. The same is true if you choose a time in the evening, perhaps between 9:00 and 10:00 PM, or a slot in the morning.

This doesn’t mean you fail if you miss your slot! Please do not misunderstand. Meditation at any time is beneficial. But for accelerating your development, establishing a consistent time is incredibly valuable. Think of it as making an appointment with your own mind; when you keep it, the results are much stronger.

Growing Beyond Your Space: From Beginner to Advanced Practitioner

It is crucial to understand that this advice about a dedicated meditation space and time is primarily for the beginning and intermediate stages of your journey. This is the period when you are training the mind. The consistency helps you overcome obstacles, both internal, like restlessness, and external, such as subtle influences from unseen beings or the forces of Mara (the tempter figure in Buddhism).

Your strong, energized home base provides a spiritual fortress. The analogy of a vehicle is helpful here: you can drive your own familiar car with ease and confidence. A new car feels strange and takes time to get used to. Similarly, a new meditation spot can feel a bit strange until the mind adapts.

However, this dependency is not permanent. Once the mind reaches a stable, unshakable level of development for instance, after attaining states of deep absorption (Jhanas) or reaching the noble stages of awakening like Stream-entry (Sotapanna), Once-returner (Sakadagami), Non-returner (Anagami), or full liberation (Arahant) there is no rule that you must stay in one spot. An advanced practitioner can meditate anywhere, at any time, whether in a quiet forest or a bustling crowd. The inner peace is so profound that external conditions no longer matter. Until then, use your dedicated meditation space as your training ground to build that unstoppable inner strength.
