Today, we will explore a question that many on the spiritual path have asked: Can anaother person, a deity, or even a celestial being like a Brahma, close your Third Eye? Furthermore, can powerful worldly arts, such as traditional sorcery or rituals, cause harm to this subtle faculty? I hope to offer a clear answer and bring understanding to this concern, which has been raised before. The goal is to provide a comprehensive explanation for everyone’s benefit.

The True Source of a Diminished Third Eye: A Look Within

Before we look at external influences, it is essential to understand what truly clouds the Third Eye. In previous teachings, we have explained that the primary cause of its impurity comes from within our own minds. These are the immature cravings, known in Buddhism as taṇhā, or thirst.

When we allow these defilements to grow, for instance, by using our spiritual sight to chase money or sensual pleasures, we damage our own practice. Any action that corrupts our virtue, or sīla, and increases the mind’s impurities can cause this divine sight, known as the dibba-cakkhu-ñāṇa or the ‘divine eye knowledge,’ to fade and eventually disappear. This is a point we have consistently emphasized in our series of discussions on the Third Eye.

The Threat of Psychic Attack: When Fear Becomes the Weapon

Now, let’s consider a specific scenario. Imagine you have developed your Third Eye. You might have a disagreement with a fellow spiritual practitioner, perhaps someone you meditated with, who you perceive as having greater spiritual strength. In the heat of the moment, after a falling out, they declare, “With my spiritual power, I will destroy your ability to see.”

I use this as an example because such events have truly happened, and people have come to me with this exact problem. They ask, “He said this to me. Will my Third Eye now close? Will it become inactive or go blind?” The first thing to understand is that if someone, even a person with more spiritual energy than you, makes such a threat, they are not a fully developed being. Their heart is filled with hatred, a desire for revenge, and a need to display power. Such a person is on a path of decline and will eventually lose their own spiritual abilities.

The Empty Boasts of Power and the Limits of Sorcery

In my experience, I have met many who boast of immense power. They claim they can end wars, reverse the rotation of the Earth, and that no one in the world is as mighty as them. This is common in the arts of charms and sorcery, what we call yantra mantra. Yet, our country endured a war for thirty years, and these powerful individuals could do nothing until our heroic soldiers achieved victory. This shows the limits of such boasts.

Practitioners of these arts often require a physical link to you, a thread from your clothes, a strand of hair, to perform a ritual. While these things can have an effect, they can also be countered and nullified. The main point is that much of their power lies in verbal intimidation, just like the spiritual practitioner who threatens to close your Third Eye. Such people who display their power out of anger are not on the level of a true sage, a hermit, or a developed monk. Their threats are childish and come from a place of malice. This is why they use words like, “I will close your Third Eye.”

The Real Danger: How Your Own Mind Can Defeat You

The greatest weapon in this world, whether in sorcery, spiritual conflict, or ordinary life, is the psychological attack. When someone you believe is spiritually stronger than you makes a threat, the first thing to collapse is your own mind. You begin to fall mentally. This weakness allows your mind to darken. Defilements can surface, and sadness can give rise to the Pañca Nīvaraṇa, or the Five Hindrances:

  • Sensual desire (kāmacchanda)
  • Ill-will (vyāpāda)
  • Sloth and torpor (thīna-middha)
  • Restlessness and worry (uddhacca-kukkucca)
  • Skeptical doubt (vicikicchā)

When one or more of these hindrances arise, the colorful, clear vision you once had through your Third Eye naturally begins to fade. A darkness takes over. This happens not because the other person did anything, but because of the fear and anxiety that their single statement created in your mind.

It is the same with sorcery. People tell me,“A certain guru said he would do something to me and my business.” After that, they live in fear. A pot breaks in the kitchen, they have a minor injury, or they narrowly avoid a car accident, and they immediately think, “He has done something!” Their own mind, which was once positive and strong, begins to weaken. Whether you have attained deep states of meditation or not, this mental collapse is the true cause of the problem. Do not fall into the foolish thinking that every small misfortune is the result of a curse.

Reclaiming Your Sight: A Practical Path to Spiritual Protection

So, how should you act when faced with such a situation? Whether the threat comes from a spiritual person or a master of sorcery, do not be afraid. Do not let your mind fall. This is the key to preventing your meditation from being disrupted and your abilities from fading.

Even if we assume the person genuinely performs an act to close your Third Eye, the first effect you might notice is a dimming of your vision. If you are certain you have not collapsed mentally but your sight is still gone, here is what you must do to restore it:

  1. Continue Your Practice: Do not stop your daily meditation. Carry on as you always have. It’s very difficult for lower-level arts like sorcery to affect a higher-level spiritual faculty. It requires a much more spiritually advanced person to do so.
  2. Make a Strong Determination: While meditating, make a resolute aspiration, an adhiṭṭhāna: “If any person has blocked my Third Eye with their influence, may that blockage be broken! May it be destroyed!” Repeat this determination during your regular chanting and rituals.
  3. Reinforce Your Virtue (Sīla): Constantly affirm your own purity. If you are a righteous person who does not harm, cheat, or deceive others, your virtue is your shield.
  4. Seek Help from Righteous Beings: Ask for support from the samyakdṛṣṭika devas—deities and brahmas who follow the righteous path. Make an aspiration for their help.

With time and consistent meditation, the blockage will break, and your sight will return. The person who acted out of anger will likely face their own decline; their own Third Eye may close as a result of their unwholesome actions. There are many such stories in the spiritual world. Therefore, you must not be afraid. If you are righteous, no one can close your Third Eye forever.

What About Deities and Brahmas? Can They Interfere?

This brings us to the final part of our question: Can deities and brahmas close your Third Eye? The answer is yes, they have the ability. They are powerful beings. If you are still spiritually immature and do not possess great spiritual strength, they have the power to suppress any of your abilities. If you sense this has happened, you must ask for forgiveness.

However, it is crucial to remember that they cannot do this to everyone. Non-human entities and practitioners of sorcery certainly cannot affect a developed person. Even deities and brahmas cannot touch someone who is highly advanced, for example, a sage who has mastered the deep meditative states (jhanas), the five higher knowledges (pañca-abhiññā), or an enlightened monk who has realized Nibbana. Higher beings like brahmas, who possess more wisdom than deities, know that interfering with such a person would create negative karma, so they would not even try.

Even a deity with wrong view (mithyā-dṛṣṭika) would fail, because there are many humans on Earth who are spiritually more powerful than them. The supreme example is the Buddha, who possessed infinite knowledge and abilities unparalleled in all three realms.

Even someone on that path, like a great Bodhisattva such as the future Maitreya Buddha, possesses perfections (pāramitā) so vast that no deity or brahma could harm them. And such a great being would never cause harm to anyone, not even an animal, because they are endowed with supreme wisdom.

Your Mind is Your Ultimate Fortress

Therefore, I advise you to never turn your back on your teacher, on nature, or on the law of karma. Doing so means you are orchestrating your own destruction.

The key is to act with wisdom and continue to develop your spirituality without interruption. The most important practice is to let go of anxiety, thinking, “It’s all the same to me whether my Third Eye is open or closed,” and simply continue your meditation. Naturally, things will correct themselves.
