Categories: Third Eye: Practical Meditation
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Welcome. In our ongoing exploration of practical spirituality, we delve into a profound topic: understanding rebirth after death. Today, we will explore how those who have awakened the Third Eye can learn to perceive where a being is reborn after they pass away. As we begin, it’s important to understand that the very concept of rebirth after death points to the existence of a continuing journey a cycle of existence we call Samsara.
This ability is not merely a side effect of opening the Third Eye; it is a distinct form of spiritual knowledge. In the Buddhist tradition, this specific insight is called Cutūpapāta-ñāṇa, the direct knowledge of the passing away and reappearance of beings. It is a unique spiritual faculty.
Just as seeing past lives with the Divine Eye (Dibba-cakkhu-ñāṇa) is a specific skill, so too is perceiving the next life. Therefore, not everyone who awakens their Third Eye will automatically be able to see the process of rebirth after death. It is a further development of one’s spiritual capacity.

The Foundation of Spiritual Vision: Your Karmic Perfections
Why is it that some can see this and others cannot? The capacity to perceive the karmic journey, whether looking into the past or the future, depends on the spiritual momentum you have built over countless lifetimes. This is known as your Pāramitā, or spiritual perfections.
Think of it this way:
- A Great Bodhisatta, a being dedicated to achieving full Buddhahood for the benefit of all, may have developed such immense Pāramitā that they can see far into the cycles of existence.
- Someone aspiring for enlightenment as a Pacceka Buddha (a solitary realizer) or as a noble disciple (Sāvaka) also cultivates these perfections and may develop these abilities to varying degrees.
The ability you have today is a direct reflection of the effort and practice you have put in during previous lives. If you find these skills difficult to awaken, it might be that you haven’t cultivated them in recent lifetimes. This requires patience and dedicated effort now. Conversely, some may find it comes easily due to their past efforts. There’s no need for discouragement; we must understand this is a gradual process.

The Power of Persistence: Why You Should Never Give Up Practice
It is natural to feel disheartened if you practice and do not see immediate results. You might think, “I won’t gain any of these abilities in this life.” This is a critical moment. If you give up now, you create a habit of discouragement that can follow you into future lives. If you are reborn as a human and are drawn to meditation again, you might face the same obstacle because of the tendency you created by giving up before.
Therefore, I urge you: do not let go of your practice. Whether you gain special abilities or not, continue to cultivate your mind. Every moment of practice is a cause for future benefit. It helps you understand the true nature of this endless cycle of rebirth after death its inherent dangers and its deep, pervasive stress (Dukkha). These insights are not for show; they are tools to motivate us towards the ultimate goal of Nibbāna, the final liberation from all suffering.

A Practical Guide to Perceiving the Next Life
This practice is for those whose Third Eye is already awakened. If you are on this path, here is how you can begin to explore rebirth after death:
Your ability to see will depend on the clarity of your concentration, the awakening of your Divine Eye, and whether you have the specific spiritual knowledge of Cutūpapāta-ñāṇa. For some, a vision may appear instantly; for others, it may take time. Be patient.
How to Interpret Your Visions of Rebirth
When a vision arises, it will reveal the realm of rebirth. Here are some common signs:
- Human Rebirth: You may see an image of a fetus developing in a womb or a small child playing happily. This indicates a new human life has been taken.
- Celestial Rebirth (Deva): The person will appear radiant and beautiful, dressed in fine, luminous garments and adorned with celestial jewelry. This signifies a birth in a heavenly realm.
- Higher Celestial Rebirth (Brahmā): You will see a being with a very simple, serene, and pure appearance, often dressed in plain white robes without much ornamentation. This reflects a rebirth attained through deep meditation.
- Animal Rebirth: The vision will be of the animal itself. If they were reborn as a dog, you would see a dog. If a snake, you would see a snake.
- Ghost Rebirth (Preta): An unpleasant or sorrowful form will appear, reflecting a life of suffering in the ghost realm.
It is important to remember that at first, you are likely seeing a psychic image of the being in their new existence. You are not necessarily summoning them.

A Vision or a Visitor? Discerning What You See
A crucial distinction must be made. Are you seeing a mere vision, or has the being actually appeared before you? Initially, the practice reveals a vision of them in their new realm. However, beings in higher realms like the deva or brahmā worlds are often sensitive.
They may become aware that a spiritually developed person from their former life is observing them. Out of connection or a desire to share a message, they may choose to genuinely appear before you, much like how one perceives other non-human entities with the Third Eye.
If you are unsure, you can make a further resolution in your meditation: “Is this a vision of the one who experienced rebirth after death, or is this being truly present before me?” The clarity that follows will help you understand the nature of the experience.

Karmic Consequences: Observing the Rebirth of a Skeptic
The Buddha’s teachings on kamma and rebirth become profoundly real through this practice. You can deepen your understanding by observing the rebirth of someone who held strong wrong views (Micchā Diṭṭhi). This refers to those who denied the results of good and bad actions, rejected the existence of past and future lives, or believed there was no merit in caring for one’s parents or offering alms to holy beings.
The teachings state that those with deeply entrenched wrong views, such as those who engage in killing or actively reject the Dhamma, may be reborn in lower realms or even in entirely different world systems, far from this one.
What modern science might call ‘extraterrestrial life,’ the Buddha described as other spheres of existence where beings can be reborn according to their karma. By resolving to see the rebirth of such individuals, you may gain insight into these other realms and witness the direct consequences of one’s beliefs and actions, verifying the Buddha’s profound cosmic map.

Interacting with Beings in Realms of Suffering
You may see a loved one reborn in a suffering state, such as a ghost realm (preta loka). Many fear this, worrying that these beings will cause harm. However, as a meditator, your mind possesses a power and purity that protects you. They cannot harm you because their mental state is weak and deprived. They may appear because they sense your spiritual strength and feel a desperate hope that you can help them.
You can help by sharing the merits of your practice. Dedicate the energy of your meditation, your chanting, and any good deeds you perform to them. If a being becomes persistent, you can set a boundary: “Receive the merits I offer at the designated time, but do not linger here otherwise.”
It’s important to know that out of twelve major types of pretas, only one can receive merits offered by relatives. They know their own karmic condition. If they approach you, it is often because they are in a state where they can be helped. Do not be afraid to offer them your compassion.

Seeing the Future: A Tool for Compassion and Self-Correction
This ability extends not only to the deceased but also to the living. You can form an intention to see the future trajectory of a living person, including the manner of their death and their subsequent rebirth. Seeing the final thought-moment before death (cuti citta), which seals their destiny, is incredibly difficult and requires the immense capacity of a great Bodhisatta or a Buddha. However, you may be able to see the general direction of their karmic journey.
A Word of Caution: Do not go around telling people their future. Most will not believe you and may think you are mentally unwell. Only if someone deeply trusts you and your spiritual practice should you gently guide them, helping them change a potentially negative future by encouraging wholesome actions now.
The Most Important Application: Look at yourself. Resolve to see your own potential rebirth after death. If you see an unfavorable destination, resolve to understand the cause. Is it a particular habit, a past action, a wrong view? Once you see the cause, you have the power to change it in the present moment. By purifying your actions and mind now, you can alter your future path from an unfortunate rebirth to a fortunate one. This is the true power of this insight: self-correction and purification.

The Ultimate Goal: Beyond All Worlds
Let me be clear: we do not praise the continuation of the karmic journey. The Buddha taught that all existence within Samsara the endless cycle of rebirth after death is ultimately marked by unsatisfactoriness (Dukkha). These spiritual abilities are not ends in themselves. They are powerful tools that help you viscerally understand the nature of this cycle, motivating you to strive for the only true safety: Nibbāna.
Remember, the Divine Eye (Dibba-cakkhu-ñāṇa) and the knowledge of rebirth (Cutūpapāta-ñāṇa) are distinct faculties. Continue to practice with diligence, to purify your virtue (sīla), and to sharpen your mindfulness and concentration. These qualities strengthen all your spiritual faculties.
Engage with these teachings practically. Do not let them remain as words on a page. When we bring these practices to life, we see the truth for ourselves and keep the Buddha’s teachings vibrant and alive in the world. By seeing the truth of rebirth after death, you can cultivate the wisdom to transcend it entirely.
