As we explore the spiritual life together, I wish to share a teaching that delves into some deep and challenging truths. This article is intended for those who have engaged in meditation, whether through our teachings, independently, or with another guide, and have cultivated a degree of inner stillness. If you have developed the ability to observe your thoughts with calm and balanced awareness, a quality known in Buddhism as Upekkha or equanimity, this message will be especially clear.
For those who have awakened their spiritual insight, sometimes called the ‘third eye,’ you may even be able to perceive these truths directly for yourself. However, I offer a gentle caution: if you feel your mind is not yet steady or balanced, it might be wiser to set this article aside for now. The concepts we will discuss require a foundation of equanimity. This teaching is offered for your spiritual progress, and approaching it with a calm mind is essential for your well-being.
Unveiling Mara: The Architect of Worldly Turmoil
Today, I want to speak about a topic some fear to even mention: how the being known as Mara is systematically working to cause the world’s destruction. Understanding this can provide profound clarity on the events unfolding around us and guide your spiritual journey.
You may have encountered teachings about Mara before. The Buddha described five distinct forms of Mara. Four of these are internal, psychological forces that arise within our own minds:
- Maccu Mara: The Mara of death.
- Skandha Mara: The Mara of the aggregates, our very sense of a solid ‘self’.
- Abhisankhara Mara: The Mara of volitional formations or karmic activities.
- Klesha Mara: The Mara of mental defilements like greed, hatred, and delusion.
The fifth Mara is an external being: Devaputta Mara, the divine-being Mara, also known as Vasavatti Mara. He resides in the highest of the six celestial realms, a plane called Paranimmita Vasavatti. It is this powerful being, driven to keep all beings bound to the cycle of rebirth under his control, whose plan we will explore. This external force exerts a significant Mara’s influence on our world.
The Agents of Mara: A Hidden Network Among Us
To enact his plan, Vasavatti Mara does not act alone. He dispatches his agents, his armies, generals, sons, daughters, and celestial followers, to be born into the human world. These agents are born across all countries, races, and religions. This is not a random process; it is a strategic deployment.
These beings are born into human bodies, sometimes referred to as entering a womb as a gandhabba (a being awaiting rebirth). Often, they are born into families and environments that lack a foundation in virtue, such as the Pancasila, the five basic precepts of ethical conduct in Buddhism.
They grow up in cultures that champion selfishness and craving as the path to success, a mindset you can see in many business and worldly ventures. This upbringing perfectly primes them to carry out their mission, as they are naturally aligned with unwholesome, destructive actions that support Mara’s influence.
Just as there are benevolent beings from higher realms who come to help humanity, agents of the universe, as I have called them, so too are there these agents of Mara. The world is a stage for both these forces.
Technology as a Double-Edged Sword: Innovation vs. Destruction
Mara’s agents infiltrate every sector of society, rising to the highest positions of power. You will find them as scientists, technologists, agricultural experts, and politicians, presidents and prime ministers of the past, present, and future. A key trait to recognize them is a deep-seated jealousy and envy, even if they possess great intelligence.
Consider the field of science. When a benevolent agent creates technology, they do so with balance. For instance, they might invent a machine that can cut two or three trees to serve human needs without causing great harm. They have the intelligence to create something more powerful but restrain themselves out of wisdom, knowing the destructive potential.
In contrast, an agent of Mara, driven by a desire for money, fame, and power whispered into their mind by Mara, will create a machine that can cut down two hundred trees at once. They pursue technological advancement without limits, pushing everything ‘over the limit.’ This is a core aspect of Mara’s influence.
We see this today with technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. While many young people are excited by these innovations, from a spiritual perspective, we see a future where these technologies are pushed too far, leading to the potential destruction of humanity. Any technology, like a knife, can be used for good or ill, but Mara’s influence ensures it is pushed towards excess and harm.
The Global Conspiracy: Mara’s Influence on Politics and Secret Societies
The political sphere is another primary domain for Mara’s influence. At the very top, there is a chief human agent, a leader in one of the world’s most powerful nations. This individual is in direct communication with Vasavatti Mara, who can appear to him, speak to him as a whisper in the ear, or send messages as thoughts. This agent is not spiritually developed; his mind is simply aligned with Mara’s goal: to control the world.
Over the last two to three centuries, this lineage of chief agents has built a vast, secret organization. Its purpose is to control the world’s powerful nations and, through them, all other countries. They aim to keep the world under their perpetual control, economically, militarily, and sensually.
This organization is a network so vast and clandestine that its members, including presidents, prime ministers, and even some religious leaders, often do not know who else is involved. It extends from the highest echelons down to the most uneducated and impoverished individuals, each knowing only their immediate superior. This network scripts world events. They plan wars, create viruses, and orchestrate economic collapses thirty to forty years in advance, all according to a master plan.
Sri Lanka: The Epicenter of a Cosmic Struggle
This secret organization has a special focus on our island of Sri Lanka, or Lanka Dipa. They have departments assigned to different regions, and the one overseeing Sri Lanka works tirelessly to destabilize it. Though we think we elect our leaders, behind the scenes, these forces are manipulating events. They create characters and scripts to stir up racial, religious, and social conflicts.
Their strategy is multifaceted. They attempt to erase our history, just as they try to erase the history of figures like Ravana. They flood the country with drugs to corrupt the youth. They promote attitudes that devalue our culture and traditions, blaming them for the country’s problems.
They even create false opposition: one group will be created to attack Buddhism, and another group of fake patriots will be created to ‘defend’ it. Both sides, however, are working for the same master, creating chaos. You can often identify them by their insatiable greed for money.
The Divine Protection of a Sacred Land
You might wonder: why is Sri Lanka so important to Mara, and why has he not succeeded after centuries of trying? Invaders have come and gone, yet they have never been able to completely destroy the Buddha’s teachings or the Sinhala people from this land.
The reason is of cosmic significance. Sri Lanka is one of the few places in the world where the pure Dhamma of the Buddha still exists. Celestial beings from the higher realms, the Devas and Brahmas, know that when their long lives end, their best chance for a favorable rebirth is in the human realm where they can practice the Dhamma to attain liberation (Nibbana) or at least secure a good future existence.
If the Buddha’s teaching, the sacred sites like the Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya, and the community of monks (Sangha) were to disappear from Sri Lanka, their path would be lost.
Because of this, these benevolent deities have enacted a special protective plan for the island. Their divine safeguarding is the reason that no matter what famines, plagues, or wars Mara unleashes upon the world, Sri Lanka has endured. Those who try to harm its sacred core will find themselves going mad, their secrets exposed, and their ruin assured. They cannot win this battle.
Recognizing the Pattern in Your Own Life
Mara’s influence is designed to weaken humanity’s mind. The secret organization facilitates the spread of pornography and sexually explicit content, which distorts the mind with lust. In countries like Sri Lanka, access to such material is deliberately left unrestricted, unlike in some other nations.
This is combined with the influx of drugs, which further corrupts the mind. When people are also crushed by economic and political pressures, unable to find food, work, or education, their minds become weak and chaotic. In such a state, can anyone think of their nation or their spiritual path? This is precisely the goal.
These forces then point the finger at the true sources of strength, Buddhism and the Sangha, blaming them for the problems they themselves created. They try to turn the younger generation against their own heritage. Use your wisdom. See these patterns in the news and in society.
You can discern who is truly working for the country’s well-being and who, driven by money or power, is acting as an agent of destruction, whether they appear as patriots or traitors.
Your Path Forward: Cultivating Wisdom Amidst Chaos
I have shared these things, which we have seen through spiritual insight and careful investigation, to give you a framework for understanding the world. This is not to create fear, but to awaken your own intelligence (paññā). When you see global events unfold, you can connect the dots.
The forces of good and evil are in a constant struggle. Benevolent agents work to maintain balance, while Mara’s influence pushes everything toward destructive excess. Even the technology you are using to read this teaching is part of this dynamic; it can be used for liberation or for bondage.
Therefore, understand this cosmic plan, but do not be overwhelmed by it. Continue to live your life, fulfill your worldly duties, and most importantly, deepen your spiritual practice. By cultivating your own inner peace and wisdom, you strengthen the forces of good and become a beacon of clarity in a world shrouded by Mara’s influence.
May the power of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha grant you the clarity to understand these plans and navigate your life with wisdom. May you develop your spiritual path through your own dedicated practice.
