Categories: Third Eye: Practical Meditation
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Welcome to this meditative reflection on observing your spiritual purpose in life. This guide forms the twenty-fifth practical meditation session designed specifically for seekers whose inner spiritual vision, often called the divine eye or Dibba Cakkhu, has begun to awaken. This gentle inner clarity allows a meditator to reflect upon spiritual realms and past mind states.
If you are new to these teachings, it is essential to explore the foundation step by step rather than forming conclusions from a single reflection. Skipping earlier foundational lessons can lead to misunderstandings, as spiritual progress relies on continuous, practical application. In previous guides, we explored practical third eye meditation techniques, learning how to direct concentrated awareness toward sacred places such as the venerated Ruwanwelisaya stupa, as well as observing unseen spiritual beings and home environments. Many practitioners have shared inspiring experiences after following those steps.
An awakened inner vision can emerge naturally during childhood, youth, or middle age due to wholesome past intentional actions, known in Buddhism as Kamma, combined with deep mental purity, termed Citta Visuddhi. Today, we focus our quiet reflection on a deeply profound topic: observing your individual spiritual purpose in life.

The Threefold Path and Human Birth
When walking an authentic spiritual path, our highest ultimate goal is liberation from all suffering, known in Buddhism as Nibbana, the supreme peace beyond mind and matter. Theravada teaching describes three distinct pathways to this ultimate enlightenment, known as the Tividha Bodhi:
- Samma Sambuddhahood: The path of a Fully Enlightened Buddha who discovers the truth independently and teaches it to the world.
- Pacceka Buddhahood: The path of a Solitary Buddha who attains liberation independently but does not establish a universal teaching.
- Sravaka Bodhi: The path of an Enlightened Disciple who realizes liberation by following the instructions of a Fully Enlightened Buddha.
Beyond identifying your ultimate spiritual aspiration, it is vital to examine why you obtained this precious human rebirth in the human realm, or Manussa Loka. Before taking birth in this human world, your consciousness departed from a prior existence, such as a heavenly deity realm, or Deva Loka, or a higher meditative state, known as the Brahma Loka. The core objective of today's meditative reflection is to look back with clarity and discern the exact spiritual purpose in life you set for yourself before taking human birth.

How to Practice Third Eye Meditation for Spiritual Purpose in Life
To prepare your mind to discover your spiritual purpose in life, choose a quiet and undisturbed space in your home. This could be your dedicated shrine room, a tranquil meditation corner, or a peaceful outdoor space surrounded by trees and nature.
Sit on your meditation cushion in the full or half cross-legged posture, known as Baddha Paryanka. Keep your spine straight, avoiding leaning back against a wall. Select a time when your concentration, or Samadhi, is naturally strong, such as early morning or late evening.
Once your mind is settled in deep calm, form a solemn mental determination, called Adhitthana:
"In this present Gautama Buddha's dispensation, may I clearly see the exact spiritual purpose and intention with which I departed my past life to take birth in this human world."
When you make this determination during third eye meditation, your visual memory will often first transport you to early childhood memories, such as being in your mother's womb or your childhood home. If your vision remains there, gently renew your determination: "May I see prior to entering this womb, at the exact moment of passing away from my prior existence, what purpose I planned for this human life." Your concentrated mind will then shift back to your prior state of existence.

Observing Past Intentions for Your Spiritual Purpose in Life
If your previous life was in a heavenly deity realm, you may perceive divine surroundings, celestial companions, or great comfort. However, the objective is not to indulge in viewing past celestial luxury, but to observe the specific mental choices you made regarding your upcoming human journey.
Through steady determination, observe how your prior mind systematically planned key milestones for your human incarnation:
- Educational choices focusing on spiritual or Buddhist philosophy.
- Decisions regarding entering higher education or university studies.
- Choosing whether to enter monastic life through ordination, known as Pabbajja, or remaining a dedicated lay practitioner, termed Anagarika.
- Intentions to serve your society, foster moral well-being, or protect the Buddha's teaching.
- Decisions regarding remaining single or entering married life while pursuing spiritual growth.
Higher spiritual beings possess refined wisdom, or Panna, far superior to normal human awareness. Before taking human birth to fulfill spiritual perfections, known as Parami, they carefully plan their life path around past unwholesome karma, or Akusala Kamma, ensuring that human difficulties do not derail their higher goals. Great celestial guardians, known as Mahesakkha Devas and Lokapala Devas, often assist in supporting these noble determinations.

How Past Realms Shape Your Spiritual Purpose in Life
Mental impressions during meditation may sometimes appear fragmented due to mental defilements, known as Kilesa, or insufficient one-pointed concentration, called Citta Ekaggata. Do not rush. Take several days, weeks, or even months to gradually purify your mind through daily moral discipline, or Sila.
Practicing together with trusted meditation companions can also strengthen mental energy, or Citta Satti. Beginning your practice with traditional Buddhist chanting and veneration cleanses the environment and shields the mind from negative unseen influences.
Your origin realm heavily influences your natural tendencies in this life:
- Beings from Brahma Realms: Existing in deep meditative absorptions, or Jhana, these beings have no sensual desires, termed Kama. When reborn as humans, they naturally prefer a pure, celibate life, known as Brahmacariya, completely detached from worldly lust.
- Beings from Higher Non-Human Realms: Beings originating from powerful non-human classes like Yakkha, Naga, Kumbhanda, or Gandhabba may carry strong, intense personality traits into human life, yet still possess great capacity for moral determination.
An ancient example from the sacred Buddhist texts involves Venerable Nagasena, who descended from higher realms but temporarily forgot his mission upon human rebirth. It required the dedicated assistance of an Arahant elder over seven years to re-awaken his past spiritual merits, demonstrating how easily human birth can obscure past intentions.

Living in Harmony with Your Spiritual Purpose in Life
By recording your meditative visions in a diary over time, you can compare past determinations with your real-life experiences from childhood up to your current age. You will notice a striking alignment, confirming that your current path was thoughtfully planned to unfold your spiritual purpose in life.
Whether you are married or single, young or elderly, working or studying, your true journey until death is fundamentally spiritual. As you navigate daily responsibilities, emphasize meditation, selfless generosity, known as Dana, and wholesome spiritual practice. If you find that your current lifestyle strays from your high moral determinations, gently refine your habits, remove personal weaknesses, and realign your daily actions with your true spiritual calling.
May this guide inspire you to cultivate deep meditative clarity, understand your prior aspirations, and walk fearlessly toward complete spiritual liberation.
