Categories: Other Meditation Teachings
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, through our spiritual teachings, I wish to address a question that several of you have asked: Do spells, curses, and incantations have any effect on those who practice meditation? This is a topic that causes concern for many, and I hope to bring clarity to everyone on this important matter.
Some of you who have reached out have faced situations where you felt harmed by such forces, and you hold various beliefs about them based on your experiences. Others, by following the methods we have taught, have already confronted and resolved these very issues.
This article is for everyone: for those currently facing such challenges, and for anyone who fears they might one day be affected. We will explore this topic of meditation and negative energy together.

Understanding the ‘Third Party’: The Nature of Spells and Incantations
First, let us understand what is meant by these spells and incantations, which in our tradition are often referred to as Yantra Mantra. These are practices rooted in the distant past, involving specific words that have been imbued with meaning over centuries, sometimes even thousands of years. These words are connected to the universe. Some are used for positive purposes, but many are aligned with negative forces.
These negative incantations are often employed by individuals with impure minds. The process can involve dark rituals, offerings, or even what is known as bili deema (sacrificial offerings), and associating with malevolent, non-human beings, or what we call amanushyayo.
These dark forces are harnessed through chanting and specific practices driven by negative thoughts and intentions. We can categorize these types of practices as a ‘third party’ influence. While there is a positive side to such ancient knowledge, our focus here is on the negative energies people fear.
The ‘Second Party’: The Protective Shield of Sacred Chants
In contrast to these third-party forces, we have a ‘second party’ – the sacred protective chants of Buddhism, known as Pirith. These are not just any words; they are recitations in the Pali language, a vibrational tongue that the Buddha himself used, which resonates with the fabric of the universe. Critically, these teachings were given to us by the Buddha, a being who completely eradicated all mental defilements, and by the great enlightened disciples, the Arahants.
Because they originate from a place of ultimate purity, these chants are infinitely more powerful than any spell or curse. For over 2,500 years, the sound of these chants has been vibrating through the mouths of millions, empowering them within the cosmos.
This second-party force has the strength to completely shatter the influence of any third-party meditation and negative energy. As I have explained in other teachings on resolving issues with non-human beings, we can use these protective chants as a powerful tool to secure our well-being.

The ‘First Party’: Discovering the Supreme Power of Your Own Mind
Now, we arrive at the most important element: the ‘first party.’ This is not an external force; it is you. It is your own mind, and the immense power it contains, which we call Citta Shakti, or ‘mind energy.’ When you meditate, what are you developing? You are developing your mind. Through practices like Samatha (tranquility meditation) and Vipassanā (insight meditation), you cultivate mindfulness and strengthen this inner energy.
This is, without a doubt, the most powerful force in the world. When you diligently develop your Citta Shakti, you are engaging with the first party. Imagine an enemy tries to harm you with a curse or by sending a bound spirit. If your mind is strong, these negative energies are rendered powerless.
They simply dissolve. Why? Because your own mental energy is far more potent. You don’t even have to fight it; the protection becomes automatic. Your mind can consciously break these influences, but they often break on their own in the presence of such strength.
This is because the entire world, all physical and non-physical phenomena, is controlled and created by the mind. To master the mind is to master your reality, making third-party influences irrelevant. I know this with 100% certainty from my own experience.

The Mind’s Vulnerability: Why Fear and Doubt Attract Negative Energy
If a developed mind is the ultimate shield, then a weak, untrained mind is an open door. The first thing that third-party forces attack is the mind. If your mind falls, it is incredibly difficult to get back up. People who are mentally weak, who constantly live in fear, thinking, ‘Someone is cursing me,’ or ‘I always have problems with spirits,’ make themselves vulnerable.
By repeatedly thinking these thoughts, their mind weakens, and they begin to attract the very things they fear. Even if there was no initial influence, their persistent fear acts like a magnet for negative beings, the demons, ghosts, and all manner of dark energies.
They then seek refuge in external things more third-party spells, talismans, horoscopes instead of building their own inner strength. This creates a cycle of dependency and mental fragility, making them easy targets for any kind of meditation and negative energy.
A Two-Fold Strategy for Unshakable Spiritual Protection
So, what is the most effective approach? I recommend a two-fold strategy that combines the first and second parties. If you feel vulnerable, you should engage both.
- First Party Practice: Develop your own mind. Practice meditation, cultivate mindfulness, think positively, and learn to understand yourself. Strengthen your Citta Shakti and Kundalini energy.
- Second Party Practice: Use the powerful tools given to us. Chant protective Pirith, like the Atanatiya Sutta. Make offerings to the Buddha (morning, noon, and evening). Entrust yourself to the protection of benevolent deities.
When you follow both of these paths simultaneously, what third-party force could possibly affect you? No matter what curses, hexes (hadi-hooniyam), or rituals are directed at you, they will be utterly useless. They will have no result. You are engaging with powers one and two; how can a power of the third rank have any impact? Think about it for yourself. Nothing is greater than the Buddha and his word. So you have absolutely no reason to be afraid if you are practically applying these teachings.

The Final Stage of Development: When the Mind Alone is Enough
As you continue to develop your mind, you will reach a point where your Citta Shakti is so powerful that you no longer need the support of the second party. The first party alone becomes completely sufficient.
At this stage, if you perceive a curse has been sent to you, you can dissolve it with a single thought: ‘May this hex be neutralized; may it be destroyed.‘ For those whose ‘third eye’ is open, you can simply see it and break it apart. If a spirit is sent, you can effortlessly release it.
In fact, one with such abilities could even return the negative energy back to its sender in an instant. These spiritual abilities arise naturally, but it is crucial that they are not grasped with craving (tanha) or ego. One who develops these skills does not do it to show off or prove they are powerful.
For such a person, a mighty curse from the third party is like a tiny speck of dust. It is like something stuck to your fingernail that you can flick away with no effort at all. This is the importance of cultivating your spiritual life.
Breaking Free from Myths: Overcoming Spiritual Excuses
Many people create false barriers for themselves, mistaking them for real obstacles. Let’s clear these up. Some say, ‘I can’t meditate because there’s a curse on my house,‘ or ‘My progress is blocked by meditation and negative energy.‘ This is a foolish story. The only thing blocking you is your lack of effort, dedication, and perseverance. External factors are never the real reason. You must rise above these excuses like a majestic elephant shaking off dust.
Here are other false ideas people use to avoid their practice:
- ‘Funerary Impurity’: Some believe they cannot meditate after attending a funeral due to a concept of ritual impurity called kili. This is nonsense the Buddha never taught. Such rules apply to third-party rituals, not to first-party mind development or second-party sacred chants.
- ‘Menstrual Impurity’: I have been asked by women if it is wrong to meditate during their monthly period. Who says such things? These are more foolish tales, ideas that truly belong to the third-party mindset.
- ‘Auspicious Timings’: There are no special times, horoscopes, or auspicious moments needed to develop your spiritual life. It doesn’t matter if you went to a party, a protest, a nightclub, or on a trip. Your effort, interest, and diligence are the only things required.
All these are just excuses, toxic seeds of wrong view (diṭṭhi) that people plant in their own minds. They become self-inflicted curses, frameworks that prevent them from walking the path.

The ‘Third-Party Mindset’: A Barrier to True Progress
This vulnerability to third-party influences is a specific state of mind. It has nothing to do with being educated or uneducated, rich or poor, black or white, or what religion you follow Buddhist, Catholic, Muslim. I say this from direct, 100% experience.
I have met highly educated people, even those living in foreign countries, who have fallen prey to these third-party beliefs. It is a ‘third-party mentality.’
Even radical atheists, who believe in nothing (no kamma, no rebirth) are immune in a different way. Their conviction that ‘nothing exists’ becomes its own powerful thought, shielding them from these specific fears. They have a strong mind, but it is one-sided and rooted in ignorance.
They will eventually suffer the consequences of their actions (kamma) in lower realms. Our path is not like that. We develop a powerful mind based on Right View (Sammā Diṭṭhi), using the first and second parties. This is the balanced and correct way. Therefore, let go of the third-party mindset and ascend to the first and second.
A Teacher’s Guarantee: An Invitation to Inner Strength
I am not just teaching theory; I am sharing what I know from my own life. Sorcerers have come to me with threats, trying to intimidate me, saying, ‘We will do this to you, we will bring you down.’ Nothing they tried could affect me. Their efforts were pointless; some of their own spells even rebounded on them. I did not even notice most of their attempts. This is how little power they have against a protected mind.
I am inviting you to become the same. You should cultivate such strength that even if the whole world gathered to curse you, it would not matter. You would remain unshaken.
In truth, when you become such a developed person, the world will not turn against you; it will come to you to learn. Of course, the physical body is subject to illness, even the Buddha experienced sickness. That is the nature of this decaying body. But your mind can remain unconquerable.
A person with a developed mind cannot be brainwashed or hypnotized. You cannot manipulate them into becoming something like a suicide bomber, because they understand themselves too deeply. Their mind cannot be pulled into such delusion.

Your Path to Freedom: Embrace Your Innate Power
So, to be clear: for someone who correctly practices meditation, there is absolutely no effect from Yantra Mantra or any third-party force. Please understand this deeply. The most powerful thing in this universe is Citta Shakti.
The energy of a pure and concentrated mind. It is a force loved by nature, by the universe itself, and by righteous gods and divine beings (devas and brahmas). Even some non-human beings are drawn to it. The protection of all these benevolent forces comes to one who cultivates their mind.
Do not be deceived by third-party tricks or waste your life and money on them. I know people who have spent millions on such things, it is utter foolishness. If someone is trapped in that mindset and cannot be helped, we must let them go to their own destruction. Your task is to develop the first and second parties. By doing so, you can clear away all these other things and make your life a complete success.
Understand this and move forward without giving any weight to these lesser forces. I believe this teaching is sufficient for you to gain a clear understanding. Realize your own innate power and practice diligently.
May the blessings of the noble Triple Gem be with you. May you overcome any such influences by understanding them correctly. May you come to the first and second paths, develop your mind through Samatha and Vipassanā, and realize your own spiritual potential, leaving the third-party mindset far behind. May it be so.
