Categories: Can Meditation Drive You Mad?
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, we will explore a unique experience that some people encounter on their spiritual journey, especially as they deepen their meditation practice. This is something that doesn’t happen to everyone; it’s a specific phenomenon that tends to arise after a certain period of dedicated practice, rather than at the very beginning.
Those who reach deep states of concentration or enter meditative absorptions, known as Jhanas, are more likely to encounter it. It’s important to understand this experience so it doesn’t become a source of confusion or doubt. We want to provide clarity on why these things happen within the spiritual path and what they signify.

What is This Intense Meditation Body Heat?
So, what is this feeling? As your meditation deepens, you might begin to notice an intense sensation of warmth or heat in your body. Sometimes, this meditation body heat can feel quite extreme. This typically occurs while you are actively meditating. For some, it starts in the soles of the feet. For others, it manifests in the palms of both hands. It can also be felt throughout the entire body or appear in various specific locations.
While this meditation body heat is most common during a meditation session, it can also linger even after you have finished. Some practitioners find the intensity of this heat difficult to bear. We have received many inquiries about this, and the guidance we have offered is the same guidance we wish to share with you in this article.

Common Fears: Is My Practice Wrong or Am I Sick?
When this powerful meditation body heat arises, it’s natural to have questions. Some people immediately worry, ‘Is my meditation practice wrong?’ They might jump to the conclusion that they have made a mistake. However, we have consistently taught that the sensations, feelings, or visions that arise in meditation are not ‘wrong.’ They are part of your spiritual development and are there to help you grow. If you’ve read our recent teachings, you’ll know this is a recurring theme.
Another common fear is that this heat is a symptom of a physical illness. We want to be clear: in this context, it is not a disease. As we explore the practical methods to manage it, you will come to understand whether what you are experiencing is a medical issue or a spiritual phenomenon. You will gain the ability to discern this for yourself with certainty.

The Spiritual Roots: Past Lives and the Fire Element
This sensation of intense heat can be felt anywhere, from the lower half of the body to the upper half. It can feel as if you are literally being heated up, sometimes with an intensity that feels like being warmed on a hot plate. To understand this, it helps to know about its spiritual origins. In our teachings on cosmic and Kundalini energy, we’ve explained that a sign of its awakening is often a cool sensation rising up the spine. The experience of meditation body heat is, in a way, the opposite of that.
One significant factor influencing this is your past actions, or Kamma, from previous lives. If you practiced meditation in past existences, particularly with certain techniques, the energy of that practice can re-emerge now. Specifically, if you worked with elemental meditations called Kasinas, such as the fire meditation known as Tejo Kasina, its energy can resurface.
The fire element has qualities of both heat and cold. If you focused on the heat aspect in the past, that latent energy can become prominent in this life as you cultivate deep concentration, or Samadhi. As your mind becomes more unified and you approach the deep states of Jhana, this meditation body heat naturally surfaces. Understanding this is the first step.

A Practical Guide: Using Mindful Resolution (Adhiṭṭhāna) to Manage the Heat
Now, let’s discuss the practical steps for managing this experience. There is a reason this energy emerges: it is a tool that can make your spiritual progress easier and help you continue your meditation without interruption. So, how do you control it?
When you are sitting in meditation and you feel this intense meditation body heat, whether in your feet, hands, or elsewhere, and it becomes difficult to bear, there is something you can do. Focus your mind directly on the place where you feel the sensation. Then, make a firm, conscious resolution. This is a practice called Adhiṭṭhāna, which is a powerful determination.
Make this resolution: ‘May this heat adjust to a level that my body can comfortably bear.’ State this intention clearly in your mind three times. As you make this Adhiṭṭhāna, you will notice the intensity of the sensation begin to decrease systematically. Even if the feeling persists after meditation, this resolution made during your practice will ensure it remains at a manageable and comfortable level. This is how you can practically train yourself to work with this energy.

Harnessing the Energy: Turning Heat into a Tool for Practice
This ability is not just something to be managed; it can be actively used to support your practice. This is a facet of the Tejo Kasina, the fire element meditation, which can arise regardless of the specific technique you use. be it loving-kindness (Metta), mindfulness of the Buddha (Buddhānussati), or any of the methods we teach, like the Third Eye or Brahma world meditations. It can also arise from practices outside of Buddhism. As mentioned, not everyone experiences this.
However, if you do, consider its benefits. If you live in a cold region, the chill can make meditation difficult. You can use your Adhiṭṭhāna to intentionally bring forth this warmth. Make a resolution for the heat to increase, to counteract the cold, and to make your body comfortable for practice. You can learn to adjust its intensity with your mind’s power, your mental energy.
Imagine meditating outdoors on a cold morning. You can generate this warmth to stay comfortable. With practice, you can sustain this heat for your entire meditation session. If you have awakened other abilities, like the divine eye or Third Eye (known as Dibba-cakkhu), you can use this warmth to stay alert and free from drowsiness. For example, if you were observing a sacred site like the Ruwanwelisaya stupa on a cold, rainy morning, this internal heat would keep you awake and focused, allowing for a clear vision.

A Warning Against Ego: The Right Attitude Towards Spiritual Abilities
This ability to generate meditation body heat can be developed to a point where you can access it anytime, a state known as mastery of mind (Citta Vasībhāva). At that level, you could even use it for worldly tasks, like staying warm while studying late at night.
However, it is crucial that you do not start meditating with these worldly goals in mind. If you practice with the intention of gaining such abilities, they will not arise. Continue your meditation with a pure intention for spiritual growth, and these skills may arise naturally as a byproduct.
Do not think of these abilities in a trivial way, like the powers of superheroes in movies. If you approach this with a narrow or egotistical mindset, you will not be able to develop them. Do not treat this as a joke. This is a genuine spiritual ability that arises from the power of a concentrated mind. When developed correctly, it can be used in many beneficial ways, especially for those living in cold climates.

The Other Side of the Coin: Experiencing and Managing Intense Cold
Just as one can experience heat, the opposite can also occur. Some practitioners report their body becoming intensely cold. This isn’t the gentle coolness of Kundalini energy we mentioned earlier, but a deep, pervasive cold that can be felt all over the body, or in specific areas like the soles and palms. At times, this cold can also become difficult to bear.
The solution is exactly the same. You can make an Adhiṭṭhāna, a firm resolution. Focus on the sensation of cold and resolve three times: ‘May this coldness adjust to a level I can comfortably bear.’ You can direct this resolution to the specific area or to your entire physical body.
This can be done during meditation or at any time the sensation arises, even during your daily activities. With this practice, you can effectively create an internal ‘air conditioner’ in hot weather, generating a pleasant coolness within. This coolness can then be used to support your meditation, including entering Jhana states or developing psychic abilities like the Third Eye.

An Aid, Not a Hindrance: How These Sensations Support Deeper Insight
It is vital to provide this understanding because these experiences are precious. Unfortunately, due to a lack of direct experience, some teachers may not be able to guide their students through this. When faced with these intense sensations without proper guidance, some practitioners stop meditating, thinking they have done something wrong.
This is a great shame, as they are abandoning their practice just as powerful abilities are beginning to surface. The people I have advised, who previously faced these challenges, have now learned to control these sensations and continue their meditation with confidence.
Furthermore, these abilities are not obstacles to insight meditation (Vipassanā), which is the path to liberation from the cycle of rebirth (Samsara). Someone who doesn’t properly understand Vipassanā might see these as useless distractions. But for a practitioner with proper training and understanding, they are aids.
Imagine being able to generate warmth during a cold spell; you can practice walking meditation with sustained mindfulness. Or generating coolness in extreme heat; this helps you develop mindfulness without discomfort. They are not hindrances; they are supports for the path.

The Nature of Arising and a Note for Advanced Practitioners
It’s important to remember that this ability, related to the Tejo Kasina, cannot be generated by force. It arises spontaneously as a result of dedicated practice in any legitimate meditation system. You cannot will it into existence; that would require an immense and separate effort. It is a gift that appears along the way. Therefore, you must hold the correct understanding and approach it skillfully.
For someone who has awakened their divine eye (Dibba-cakkhu), they can actually observe this process. They can look at the part of the body where the meditation body heat is occurring and see how it functions, whether it’s inside or outside the body, how it’s generated, and how the Adhiṭṭhāna controls it. This direct observation provides a perfect understanding of how to increase, decrease, and master the sensation.

Discernment is Key: When to Seek Medical Advice
Finally, an important point of practical advice. If you experience this heat and, despite making a firm resolution (Adhiṭṭhāna), it does not subside at all, then you should consult a doctor. If the condition is a genuine physical illness, it will respond to medicine, whether from a traditional Ayurvedic physician or a Western doctor. That is the nature of physical ailments.
However, if this meditation body heat is a spiritual phenomenon, no amount of medicine will make it go away. In fact, as you meditate more, it will likely increase. This is why the method of Adhiṭṭhāna is the primary tool for managing it. This discernment is crucial.
