Today, we are discussing a deeply important topic: Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction. In our modern society, many individuals find themselves trapped by various dependencies. This includes attachments to substances like drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. It also encompasses behavioral attachments such as overeating, excessive self-stimulation (masturbation), sexual dependencies, and addiction to internet pornography. Many young people reach out to us via WhatsApp, sharing how their real-world lives, goals, and relationships have deteriorated due to these habits, desperately seeking a way out.
Whether you are someone who wants to quit but feels entirely powerless, or someone looking to begin a fresh, disciplined spiritual journey, these Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction are designed to gently guide you toward true freedom.
In our earlier teachings, we introduced a foundational practice titled ‘Things you should do during meditation.‘ This article builds upon that framework, offering you a structured, powerful devotional pathway.

Awakening Inner Strength Through Practice
When applying Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction, we do not ask you to simply rely on forced, painful willpower. If you cannot stop your habit immediately, do not despair. Continue your daily life but deeply commit to adding these spiritual practices to your routine. As you consistently engage in these Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction, your Kusala, which is your positive karmic merit or wholesome spiritual energy from the past will begin to surface.
This rising positive energy will naturally weaken your attachments. You will soon find a strong mental voice within you saying, ‘I must step away from this; this is harming me.‘ To help you cultivate this energy, we have created a comprehensive devotional guide called the Sambuddha Vandana. This guide includes the primary veneration of the Buddha, followed by the most powerful Theravada Buddhist chanting known as Pirith (protective discourses), including the Thun Suthraya, Khanda Piritha, Mora Piritha, and Bojjhanga Piritha.
Initially, reciting these may take up to an hour and a half, but as you become familiar with the beautiful Pali language, it will soon take only 40 to 45 minutes of your day. Do not worry about the time; focus on the immense spiritual mental strength you are building.

The Three Profound Benefits of Chanting
Engaging in these daily Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction provides three profound benefits. First, it grants you the unwavering mental strength to break free from dependencies. You will notice the frequency of your harmful habits naturally decreasing. Second, it offers powerful protection against unseen negative forces. In Buddhism, we recognize beings such as Amanushya (unseen entities), including Yaksha, Naga, Kumbhanda, and Gandharva, as well as the negative impacts of charms or curses (Kodiwina). If you suffer from these afflictions, do not lose hope or become like a lifeless zombie. Instead, view your hardship positively, as a catalyst that brought you to the Dhamma.
The third benefit is the harmonizing of your home. The Pali language was chosen by the Buddha because it is a stable, powerful cosmic language. By chanting these sacred words morning and evening, you attract positive Vishwa Shakthi (universal cosmic energy) into your home. Much like the crystal (Vishwa Kendra) method we previously taught for Samatha (calming) meditation, this chanting purifies your environment, repels negative entities, and creates a deeply peaceful atmosphere that even visitors will immediately feel. It acts as an impenetrable spiritual shield.

Creating Healing Water and Daily Dedication
A vital component of our Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction involves creating your own blessed healing water. When you recite these chants, place a white chanting thread (Pirith Noola) into a vessel of pure water, holding the thread in your hand. Allow the healing power of Pirith to flow into the water. Every morning and evening, drink this blessed water while chanting the verse Sabbīti vajjanthu (May all distress be averted). Make a strong intention that this water will heal your body and grant you the spiritual mental strength needed for your journey.
As a point of holistic health, drink this pure blessed water in the morning instead of commercial milk powder. Many scientists and doctors have noted that these artificial milk powders, often pushed onto developing nations as a commercial habit only induce lethargy. In contrast, scientific observations, such as those from Japanese water experiments, have shown that positive words and frequencies physically change water molecules for the better. After blessing the water, tie three strands of the chanting thread around your wrist or neck weekly for continuous protection.

Patience, Consistency, and Sharing the Dhamma
Patience and consistency are essential when utilizing these Buddhist practices for overcoming addiction. You may see small shifts in a few days, but profound changes require weeks or months. You must establish a firm Adhishtana (strong determination) to continue this practice, alongside your Metta (loving-kindness) meditation and Third Eye practices, for the rest of your life.
We offer the Sambuddha Vandana PDF completely free of charge. We encourage you to print it beautifully, which may cost around 1500 to 2000 rupees and share it as a Dhamma Dana (the ultimate gift of truth), especially during the sacred month of Vesak.
