Categories: Cosmic Messengers
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all! For those of you exploring the spiritual life, we wish to offer some insight and clarity. We’ve noticed a theme emerging, particularly among those who feel they are “Universal Agents.” Many sincere people on the path of spiritual seeking are experiencing thoughts and feelings that leave them with profound questions. They feel they have come to this world for a specific purpose or mission.
If you are new to these teachings, we encourage you to explore our full series of articles on this topic to gain a broader understanding. This particular message is for everyone, but especially the young men and women who are drawn to this line of inquiry. We see you searching, both online and in spiritual circles, trying to make sense of these feelings. This article aims to provide the guidance you are looking for.

The Endless Search: ‘Where Did I Come From?’
A common thread in this spiritual seeking is a set of recurring thoughts: “Where did I come from? I feel I came to the human world for a special duty.” These thoughts lead to a state of being stuck, wrestling with unanswerable questions: “If I came for a mission, what is it? How do I find it?”
To find answers, many turn to various sources. The internet is a primary tool. Others seek out teachers who are considered spiritually advanced. Some explore traditional methods like visiting shrines or consulting astrologers and other mystical arts. They are all hoping to find the answer to their deep, personal questions.

The Allure of ‘Angel Numbers’ and Divine Signs
In this search, one phenomenon has become particularly prevalent, especially among younger people: seeing what are commonly called “Angel Numbers.” These are repeating number sequences like 111, 333, or 444, which are seen as divine symbols or frequencies. I have noticed a strong tendency for people to become fascinated by them.
When you see such a number, the common reaction is to search for its meaning online. The results often suggest that you are a special person, that you are beginning to receive messages from the universe or a divine realm. The language used is often heavy with concepts from other religions or belief systems, speaking of things like ‘fairy navigators.’ Those of you who have looked this up will know what I mean.
Many people send me screenshots from their phones, the clock showing 11:11, or other recurring numbers, asking what it means. But this constant searching often leads to stagnation, like being stuck in the mud, going over the same ground day after day without any real progress. This is a misunderstanding I wish to clarify, as I receive these messages from young people both in Sri Lanka and abroad.

The Danger of Identifying with Grand Past Lives
This spiritual seeking often leads to another trap: trying to find out who you were in a past life. After searching online and not finding true satisfaction, the search continues. People ask me and others like me, “Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here?”
This can lead to a state of confusion where people begin to identify with great figures from the past. Some convince themselves they were great kings like Ravana, Dutugemunu, or Parakramabahu. Others believe they were legendary figures like Sita or Mandodari. They adopt these beloved, romantic characters from history as their own past identities. Now, it may or may not be true.
You might have been one of those figures in a past existence, or you might not have been. But you have no definite confirmation, no direct experiential proof established through your own spiritual strength. It’s either something someone else told you, or a feeling you developed yourself, perhaps after watching historical dramas or reading stories. We have seen countless young people, and people of all ages, become lost and helpless by loading their minds with these ideas. Please do not let this happen to you.

The Buddha’s Wisdom: We Have All Been Kings and Beggars
Let us consider the Buddha’s perspective. The Buddha once pointed to an anthill and told his monks that there wasn’t a single being in that colony who had not been a universal monarch (a Cakkavatti king) at some point in their countless past lives. We have all traveled through Samsara, the beginningless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. We have been kings, beggars, wealthy merchants, and even animals like dogs and cats. We have been born in every conceivable realm.
Therefore, to be boastful about a single past life is a sign of foolishness, not wisdom. We have no use for clinging to a decayed past. We must let the past go, taking only the lessons that are useful for our present and future. Do not fall into the trap of thinking, “I was like this in the past; I had this power; these things were mine.” It is a state of mind that leads only to suffering. Do not attach yourself to any past identity.

The True Measure of a Person is in the Present
Here is an important truth: if you were truly such a great being in the past, you would not be going around telling everyone about it. Someone who truly knows their past is silent and humble. The fact that you may not have this quality suggests that you should reconsider your assumptions.
But even if you were such a person, it has no real importance now. What matters is what you are doing in the present for the good of society, your nation, and your religion. You may have been a king in the past, but in this life, you might be born into a poor family or feel unable to accomplish anything. Do not dwell on these things.
So, I urge you today: if someone has told you that you were a great person in a past life, or if you see ‘Angel Numbers’ and other divine signs, if you have been told anything that feeds your pride or ego, put it aside. Let it go from your mind. Chasing after these things is meaningless.
I have even had young men and women send me their photos, asking, “Can you look at my face and tell me where I came from and who I was in my past life?” This is a foolish activity. Please do not cultivate such a mindset. We see many intelligent, educated people, even university students and professionals, who are wise in their worldly life but deeply naive in this area of spiritual seeking. Do not get trapped here. There is no progress or positive result to be found.

The Real Path: Practical Steps to Inner Clarity
So what should you do? Stop chasing ‘Angel Numbers.’ Stop trying to find out who you were in a past life. Stop talking about it. Live in freedom. Whoever you were, live quietly with that knowledge if it comes. There is no need for boasting.
Instead of looking outside, turn inward. If you are someone who wants to live in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings and has love for your country and a desire to be of service, there is a practical framework we have shared since our very first teachings. Focus only on these things and practice them consistently:
- Practice chanting protective recitations, known in the Buddhist tradition as Pirith, which helps to calm and concentrate the mind.
- Commit to observing the Five Precepts, the foundational ethical guidelines called Pancasila.
- Engage in acts of homage (Vandana) to cultivate respect and gratitude.
- Develop your mind through meditation (Bhavana). The most important of these is mindfulness, or Sati.
This is the path forward. Dedicate yourself to this practical training.

How True Answers Emerge from Silence and Practice
As you train yourself in meditation, you may, in time, develop the direct knowledge to see past lives for yourself. This is a spiritual faculty known as Pubbe-nivasanussati-nana. If this ability arises, you will be able to confirm for yourself, through your own spiritual power, who you were.
The realization will come from within you, not from external symbols, numbers, or other people. Therefore, put aside all the things you see and feel externally; they are meaningless for your ultimate progress. You may see channels online with millions of views explaining these signs. Do not waste your time watching them. From today onwards, stop chasing these things.
Your focus should be on your present life. If you are a student, succeed in your education. If you are in business, a job, or agriculture, work to succeed in your worldly life. And alongside this, cultivate your spiritual life. The Buddha’s path teaches us to balance these two aspects. This advice is for everyone, whether you believe you are a ‘Universal Agent’ or not. Balance your lay life and your spiritual life.

The Paradox of Seeking: Stop Searching to Truly Find
Stop asking, “Who am I? Why did I come here? From which world did I come?” With time, nature itself may provide the answers. But there is a fundamental principle to understand: as long as you are actively searching for who you are, you will never receive the answer. This is because you are searching in an impractical way. You are trying to find answers from external things, the internet, symbols, gurus, while neglecting the practical work of meditation. You are going in circles.
Only when you abandon the search in external things, when you forget about trying to find out ‘who you are,’ and simply dedicate yourself to the practical development of meditation with patience and equanimity, only then, gradually, will the true meaning of any signs you see be revealed. Until then, you are just like a mad person chasing shadows.
The answers about your purpose or mission in this world will also come through this patient, practical application, not through frantic searching. It could take years, even a decade or more. The timeframe is different for everyone.
So, consider what is more skillful. To continue searching, feeling mentally exhausted and disappointed? Or to let it all go, as this teaching suggests, and walk a balanced path of worldly and spiritual development? Which path brings more mental peace? The choice is yours.

Your True Work is Here and Now
To put it simply: you will not find a satisfying answer in ‘Angel Numbers.’ You will not find it in any mystical art. Only by living a practical spiritual life, with patience, giving time its due place, will the answers arise from within you. And that may take many years. Therefore, learn to live happily in the present moment.
Don’t struggle with the past or with fantasies of the future. By living in the here and now, you can develop your spiritual qualities. That is all you need to do. Whether you are an agent from the universe or not, this is the way you will truly find out who you are, in due time.
This is the understanding I wanted to share, because so many people ask me about these things. This is the only answer I can give. I hope you will act according to this guidance. This concludes today’s teaching on how ‘Universal Agents’ should conduct themselves at this time.
