May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, I wish to explore a question that troubles many spiritual seekers: does meditation cause illness? This idea has become a persistent myth in our society, creating fear and hesitation for those wishing to start or deepen their practice. Many people have asked me about this, worried that their spiritual journey might lead to physical harm. Let’s address this concern directly with clarity and kindness.
This belief that meditation leads to sickness is a powerful misconception, often spread by individuals who lack genuine experience in the practice. These ideas become registered in our minds as facts, creating a significant barrier. For some, this fear is so strong that it prevents them from ever beginning to meditate. This is a perfect example of what in Buddhism we call micchā diṭṭhi, or ‘wrong view’, a belief that leads us away from truth and liberation, not towards it.

A Simple Truth: Our Bodies Are Naturally Prone to Sickness
Let’s use our common sense. If we reflect honestly, we must ask ourselves: does the body get sick, whether we meditate or not? From the day we are born until the day we die, isn’t our body susceptible to illness? Even a simple sneeze happens. Was that sneeze caused by meditation? Of course not.
The answer is right there in this simple observation. The human body is impermanent and subject to sickness as a natural condition of life. The question, ‘does meditation cause illness?’, overlooks this fundamental truth.
What Are the Real Myths We Should Discard?
These are the kinds of harmful beliefs we should recognize as true myths. It’s ironic that today, many people, especially the young, are quick to dismiss ancient traditions, Sri Lankan history, or the Buddha’s teachings as ‘myths,’ yet they readily accept these baseless, modern fears.
I invite you to see things differently. Don’t dismiss the profound wisdom of the ages. Instead, learn to identify and discard the genuinely false views that hold you back, like the unfounded fear that meditation can cause illness. This is a foolish idea, and I must say so directly, because breaking through these strong, incorrect views is essential for your progress.

Addressing Specific Fears: Kundalini, Paralysis, and Headaches
Many questions I receive are very specific. People hear about practices we teach, like the meditation to awaken the ‘Third Eye‘ or practices for attaining higher states of consciousness (like the Brahma realms), and become afraid. They ask, ‘Venerable Sir, is it true that awakening Kundalini energy can cause paralysis?’
Kundalini is a term for the powerful, dormant life-force energy within us. When it awakens through meditation, certain sensations can occur. People ask if it causes back problems, mental breakdowns, or headaches. It is true that as the energy centers, or chakras, awaken, you might feel some pressure in the head as the nerves adjust.
However, these are mild, manageable sensations. They are not unbearable, and they certainly do not lead to serious conditions like paralysis. These fears are just more examples of the baseless questions that have taken root in society.

The Danger of Listening to Inexperienced Critics
So why do people believe these things?
The problem often starts when a sincere person begins to meditate after hearing our teachings but then seeks advice from the wrong people. They ask, ‘armchair pundits’, those who have never meditated consistently for even a single year, who have no deep spiritual inclination.
These people, posing as experts, will say, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t do that kind of meditation! Awakening the Third Eye or Kundalini is dangerous! I’ve heard it causes paralysis, kidney failure, and terrible headaches.‘ Hearing this, the sincere beginner becomes frightened, and their meditation practice is ruined. Their path is blocked by foolishness.
The Ultimate Proof: The Health of the Buddha
Personally, I do not listen to such negativity. I have always chosen to focus on what is positive, what is helpful, and what supports my forward progress. When you hear such claims, you can sense they are false. Think about it logically: if the answer to ‘does meditation cause illness?’ was yes, then the Buddha himself should have been the sickest person in history! We are following Lord Buddha’s teachings, the Dhamma. He was the one who reached the pinnacle of mastering Kundalini energy and awakened all his chakras.
If these practices caused paralysis or arthritis, he should have been the first to suffer. The fact that he achieved perfect health and liberation shows how nonsensical these claims are. You are trying to walk a spiritual path in a society where people say such foolish things.

A Call to Courage and Wise Inquiry
It puzzles me that even after we provide so many teachings to foster clear understanding, some people still believe these myths and bring these questions to us. However, your questions are welcome, because they show me what incorrect views are circulating.
They allow me to address these issues for the benefit of everyone and explain how people can destroy their own spiritual path by clinging to these fears.
When someone tells you meditation is dangerous, challenge them with respectful questions. Ask them: ‘How long have you been meditating?‘ ‘Who told you this?‘ ‘How much experience does that person have?‘ Follow the chain of information. You will likely find there is no one at the source with any real, direct experience of this supposed harm. The idea that meditation causes illness is a generational rumor with no foundation.
The Real Cause of Sickness: Understanding Kamma
So what is the real cause of sickness?
In Buddhism, we understand that our present conditions are often the result of kamma, our intentional actions from the past. A condition like paralysis is the result of a past unskillful action ripening. How many people in the world suffer from paralysis? Or kidney disease? Or chronic headaches? Are they all meditators? No. These ailments arise from various causes, and a deep spiritual understanding points to kamma as a primary factor.
In fact, I would invite those who are suffering from such illnesses to begin a spiritual practice, to cultivate a peaceful mind.
If you believe that meditation is the cause of your ailments, then there is no greater fool. I have to use strong words like this sometimes, calling it foolish or even donkey-like, not to insult you, but to wake you up. These words are meant to awaken your wisdom, your paññā, and your mindfulness. Sometimes, without a sharp word, the mind will not open. So please, do not fall for these wrong views. Trust in your own spiritual journey.

The Path Forward: Meditate Through Sickness and Health
Here is my simple advice. If you have any disease, practice meditation and cultivate your spirituality. If you have no disease, practice meditation. If a disease arises while you are meditating, continue to practice meditation. Now, do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that illness is caused by the practice. I am saying that the body can get sick at any time. I, too, have experienced fever, coughs, and colds.
This is something the Buddha and all the enlightened ones also had to endure. When you are very ill, you should give your body the rest it needs. Take a break from formal meditation if necessary. But when you regain some strength, even if you are facing a long-term illness, you should continue your practice. Practice with balance, giving the body rest without making the illness a torment. This is the way forward.
Trust Your Path, Not the Myths
