Categories: What We Feel in Meditation?
May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you all!
Today, through these spiritual teachings, I wish to clarify a question that arises for many who engage in practical meditation (Pressure in Forehead During Meditation: A Sign of Progress). It is a question I hear frequently from those who practice with us, especially those following our guidance on developing the mind. The question is simple, yet significant for many on this path:
‘Why do I feel a tightness or pressure in the middle of my forehead during meditation?’
This is perhaps the most common query I receive. It comes from practitioners of all our programs, whether it’s the ‘Practical Path to the Brahma Worlds‘ or the ‘Practical Third Eye‘ program. In nearly every teaching we share, someone asks about this sensation. I previously shared a teaching explaining that we shouldn’t pay too much attention to the various physical, mental, and bodily sensations that arise in meditation.
In that discussion, I mentioned many common experiences but promised to dedicate a separate explanation to this specific feeling of pressure in the forehead. Today, I hope to fulfill that promise and bring clarity to this experience.

The Technique: How Concentration Creates the Sensation
In our meditation programs, I have explained a particular method for unifying the mind. It is a technique I have practiced myself for many years and found to be one of the easiest ways to develop the mind, enter states of deep absorption known as Jhāna, awaken the ‘third eye,’ arouse energy like Kuṇḍalinī, and allow universal energy to flow. The method is straightforward: you are guided to focus your mind on a single point. This could be directly in the middle of the forehead or at the point between the eyebrows. You are instructed to ‘look’ at this spot with your mind and hold your attention there.
In another technique, you are guided to place your awareness anywhere in the vertical space from the tip of your nose up to the center of your forehead, wherever your mind settles most easily. When you consistently practice either of these methods, especially in the beginning, a common result is a feeling of tightness or pressure in forehead meditation. Let me state this clearly: this is a completely normal phenomenon.
What It Is and What It Isn’t: A Sign of Samādhi
Many people ask, ‘What does this mean? What is the cause? Is my chakra awakening?’
While the sensation is related to energy centers, it is not accurate to simply call it a ‘chakra awakening.’ It would be more correct to say it is a sign of developing samādhi, which means concentration or the unification of mind.
The reason for this is simple. You are consistently using a part of your awareness in a way you never have before. Through these teachings, you were given a new instruction: hold your mind at the center of your forehead and, while doing so, mentally repeat your meditation word, your kammaṭṭhāna. When you do anything repeatedly, you become accustomed to it, and your focus becomes unified. The pressure you feel is the tangible sensation of your mind’s energy (what we call citta shakti) gathering at that point. This is an aspect of reality that medical science cannot measure. It is a natural outcome of the practice.
This feeling is simply a signpost, an indicator that your mind has become concentrated. There is no benefit in investigating it further or dwelling on it. As I explained in a previous teaching about physical sensations, getting caught up in analyzing these feelings is a distraction. The pressure in forehead meditation is merely an initial stage. It has no deeper meaning at this point. It simply means your mind is settling. Do not search for meaning in it; do not stop here.

Vibrations, Pulling, and Other Related Sensations
As this concentration deepens, other related sensations may arise in the same area. Some people feel:
- A vibrating or throbbing sensation.
- A feeling like a thread is gently pulling from that spot.
- A sensation like needles are being drawn out or gently pricking the skin.
- A distinct feeling of some form of energy present there.
These are all natural variations of the same phenomenon. A key development is that, as your practice becomes more established, you might start to feel this sensation constantly, even 24 hours a day.
Why does this happen?
Because you are training your mind to concentrate. The ultimate goal of this practice is to achieve states of deep peace, mental well-being, and extraordinary human potential, like awakening the ‘third eye’ or attaining Jhāna. You are cultivating and mastering this state of concentration.
When the Sensation Appears in Daily Life
Once you have practiced consistently, something remarkable happens. Your mind learns to concentrate automatically. For instance, you might be at home washing clothes. As you focus on the task, your mind, now trained in concentration, will naturally unify. And then you’ll notice it: the pressure in forehead meditation begins, right there while you’re working.
This can happen anywhere: working at the office, walking down the street, or even just thinking deeply about a single topic. If your mind focuses on one thing, that familiar tightness can appear. You could be sitting and gazing at a tree; as your mind settles on the object of sight, your forehead will begin to feel tight. This is the natural result of your training.
Sometimes, this can be accompanied by a feeling of tightness across the whole head or even a headache. This, too, is normal. Over time, as you meditate more, this sensation naturally subsides or disappears. More importantly, you become accustomed to it. It no longer feels strange or distracting. Even as I am delivering this teaching, I can sometimes feel that pressure in my forehead or at the crown of my head. It is a normal state for me now, and I pay it no mind. It is simply a sign that the mind is concentrated. If this happens, one can simply close their eyes and effortlessly move to the next stage of meditation.

The Real Meaning: A Positive Sign for Your Practice
So, to summarize, the reason you feel pressure in forehead meditation is because you are consistently using that point as an anchor for your attention. After starting to meditate in your chosen posture and focusing on the spot between your nose and forehead, your mind naturally learns to gather there.
This state of concentration can then arise during any activity in your lay life. You might be listening to a song with headphones, and as your mind absorbs into the music, the pressure appears. You could be watching television or even just observing buses on the street, any act of sustained focus can trigger it. Even while sweeping the floor at home, if your mind becomes absorbed in the task, the sensation will arise.
This is a good thing. It is a wonderful sign that your mind is developing. Do not be afraid or alarmed, and please do not waste your time trying to find some hidden meaning in it. There is no benefit there. The correct approach is to use this established concentration to move to the next step. Take the next step to develop your mind further.
In our programs, I have already provided the words and themes for contemplation (the kammaṭṭhāna) that you should use. Follow those instructions.
Your Path Forward: Use Concentration, Don’t Analyze It
Do not be afraid of these physical and mental sensations. As I have explained before, to search for their meaning or become fixated on them is to get stuck. If you get caught by these experiences, your meditation will not progress. Therefore, categorize this feeling of tightness in the forehead as a normal, natural phenomenon. It is just that. Our task is to shape our lives in a way that allows us to develop our meditation practice.
I trust that this teaching has brought clarity and understanding to why your forehead feels tight or vibrates, why it feels like needles, why the pressure can last 24 hours a day. whether you are sleeping, dreaming, meditating, or engaged in worldly tasks. I believe you now have the answer. This should no longer be a question for you.
For those of you practicing with us, I hope you now understand this and can let go of any concern. There is no need to ask about it again.
